In a moment that seems physically impossible but actually happened, Peyton Chatagnier pulled off the ultimate “heads-up” play for Ole Miss. During a game against Alcorn State, Chatagnier was caught in a pickoff attempt at first base—the kind of play that usually results in an easy out. Instead, it became a defensive meltdown of historic proportions. As soon as the pitcher made his move, Chatagnier bolted for second and beat the tag with a head-first slide. Seeing the Alcorn State defense completely lose their bearings, he didn’t even pause. He noticed third base was left totally uncovered and scrambled 90 feet further. The catcher desperately tried to sprint down the line to cover third, but Chatagnier beat him there too. Realizing the catcher was now standing at third base and absolutely no one was guarding home plate, Chatagnier took off one last time. He slid into home safely, completing a 270-foot sprint to score a run on a play that started with him being “picked off.” It remains one of the only times in college baseball history a runner has “stolen” three bases on a single pickoff attempt, leaving the announcers—and the internet—speechless. The Pirates threw the ball to first baseman Will Craig, which should have been an easy force out to end the inning. Instead of stepping on first base, Craig chased Báez toward home plate after Báez suddenly stopped and ran backward. While Craig was chasing him, Cubs runner Willson Contreras sprinted all the way from second base and scored at home. Craig then threw the ball to the catcher too late, and the chaos continued because no one was covering first base. Báez turned around, ran back to first safely, and eventually reached second after a bad throw. He later scored on the next hit, turning what should have been the third out into two Cubs runs in one of the strangest plays in baseball history. .
