Mantis hatch from a protective egg case called an ootheca, which the female attaches to plants or structures and fills with dozens to hundreds of eggs. After weeks or months, depending on the species and climate, tiny mantis nymphs emerge all at once, wriggling out on thin threads. They look like miniature adults, immediately disperse to avoid eating each other, and begin hunting small insects within hours.
