THA grounded left heel (for a right-handed thrower or right heel for a left-handed thrower) in the shot put is critical for power transfer, balance, and injury prevention. This is one of those small technical details that makes a huge difference in consistency and distance. When the left heel is grounded:
- It anchors the lower body.
- It stops forward momentum. (“Shifting”)
- And it allows energy to transfer up and through the right side.
If the heel is off the ground, the block collapses and power “shifts” forward instead of staying back on the right side. A flat, grounded heel also:
- Increases surface contact.
- Maximizes force production.
- And allows better hip-to-shoulder separation.
Without that connection, the throw becomes arm-dominant instead of full-body explosive. (Hints when athletes throw a shot like a baseball).

Simple cue ideas I use with my Athletes are:
- “Left heel through the concrete.”
- “Stick the block.”
- “Punch the ground before you punch the shot.”
- “Plant the heel”
