You, me, + a spring lightning storm rolling in? ⚡️🧡 I still can’t get over how insaneeeee our recent lightning storms have been! The bolts have split so much and covered the sky, and they’ve lasted hours at a time. One evening I literally sat next to my bedroom window for over an hour and 45 minutes watching the lightning dance across the sky! I set up my phone in the windowsill and was able to catch some incredible lightning bolts so I hope you enjoy these as much as I did. 🥰 They’ve been slowed down to about .3-.5 so you can see them better! Thunderstorm at sunset in South Dakota 🫣 Thunderstorms are usually driven by the heating of the Earth’s surface during the day, which creates rising warm air and atmospheric instability. For this reason, they often reach their first peak in the late afternoon or early evening, when the ground has absorbed the maximum amount of solar energy. After sunset, this direct energy source disappears, and in many cases storms weaken because the lower atmosphere becomes more stable. However, under certain conditions, thunderstorms can intensify again after sunset, and this is mainly due to changes in the structure of the atmosphere rather than surface heating. As the ground cools, a stable layer of air forms near the surface. This layer reduces friction and allows winds slightly above the ground to accelerate, creating what meteorologists call a low-level jet. This fast-moving air transports warm, moist air into the storm system, effectively supplying it with fresh energy and moisture. At the same time, the stable layer near the ground can act like a lid, preventing energy from dispersing. Instead of weakening, the storm’s updrafts become more focused and efficient above this layer, a process known as elevated convection. This can make existing storm systems more organized and longer-lasting, sometimes allowing them to grow stronger during the night. Spectacular tornado in Bismarck, North Dakota 🌪️ In June 2025, the area around Bismarck experienced several tornado events as part of a broader outbreak of severe weather across North Dakota. These storms were produced by powerful supercell thunderstorms that developed under highly unstable atmospheric conditions, bringing tornadoes, large hail, and damaging winds to the region. One of the most notable incidents occurred on June 27, 2025, when multiple tornadoes were reported in central North Dakota. Two of these touched down just north of Bismarck during the evening. The first tornado was later classified as an EF1, with wind speeds of around 95 mph (about 150 km/h). It caused localized damage to a rural property, including roof damage to an outbuilding, overturned equipment, and snapped trees. A second tornado formed shortly afterward in the same general area. However, it remained over open land and did not cause any observable damage, so it was rated EF-U (unknown intensity). Both tornadoes were relatively short-lived, lasting only a few minutes before dissipating. These events were part of a larger outbreak that produced numerous tornadoes across several counties within a short time span. Despite the dramatic visuals—captured in photos and time-lapse videos showing funnel clouds descending from dark storm systems—there were no reported injuries or major destruction in the Bismarck area itself.
