DJPeople often say, “You’re so strong.”
But strength was never the goal — survival was.
When someone grows up in chaos, they aren’t trying to be brave, they’re just trying to make it through. They learn to stay quiet, stay small, stay alert… whatever it takes to endure.
What people don’t see are the nights they were terrified, the parts of them that still flinch, the fear that became wired into their nervous system.
Surviving something doesn’t mean it didn’t change them. Some of that fear stays in the body long after the danger is gone. So when people call them strong, it often misses the deeper truth. The trauma didn’t make them strong, the healing is what did but that doesn’t mean that don’t feel it anymore
