GARedbuds are beginning to bloom here in Central Texas.
I was recently asked whether Oklahoma redbud is superior to Texas redbud.
Oklahoma redbud is a selected form of Texas redbud originally identified in Oklahoma. It typically has deeper magenta flowers and glossier leaves. It is often slightly more compact, making it a good fit for smaller landscapes.
Texas redbud is the native form. Bloom color can vary from soft pink to deeper tones. Leaves are matte. It can grow a bit larger depending on conditions.
Both tolerate partial shade. Both are adaptable. Both perform well in Zones 8–10 with proper drainage.
The real decision comes down to mature size, light exposure, and your personal preference in bloom color and leaf texture.
Because redbuds resent poor drainage and tight spaces, where you plant them matters more than which selection you choose.
Even Martha Stewart purchased Oklahoma redbuds for her farm when visiting Oklahoma a few years ago. They are beautiful trees.
But beautiful only works if it fits your space.

TISpring officially begins on 🌿 March 20, 2026, but Dallas–Fort Worth including Plano, Frisco, Allen, McKinney, Richardson, Garland, and Grapevine is already seeing a beautiful early start to spring. 🌸
Late February feels more like April, with warm sunny days reaching 80–84°F this weekend (Feb 28 – March 1) ☀️ before a cooler front arrives March 2 with highs near 69–70°F. After that, rain chances and possible thunderstorms are expected through late next week, helping North Texas greenery and wildflowers flourish. 🌧️⚡
Across DFW, many trees are blooming before leaves appear, filling neighborhoods, parks, and trails with color. 🌿
🌸 Early Spring Trees Blooming Now
• Texas Redbud – Bright pink-purple blossoms on bare branches
📍 Seen in neighborhoods and parks across Plano and Richardson and along trails like Arbor Hills.
• Saucer Magnolia – Large pink and white blooms before leaves
📍 Found in residential areas and gardens across DFW.
• Yoshino Cherry Blossoms – Soft white and light pink blooms
📍 Best seen at the Dallas Arboretum and neighborhood parks.
• Ornamental Pear Trees – White flower clusters lining streets
📍 Common across Plano, Frisco, McKinney, and Garland.

🌼 Yellow: Coreopsis and Dandelions along roadsides and trails.
