FUThe Tilt-Shift Lens Trick That Makes Cities Look Like Toys
A tilt-shift lens is a specialized camera lens that physically shifts the glass elements relative to the sensor.
This changes the plane of focus in a way a standard lens cannot replicate.
The result is a razor-thin band of sharpness with heavy blur above and below the frame. This is called miniature faking.
Shallow depth of field is something our brains associate with close-up photography of small objects.
When that same optical signature appears in a wide city shot, the brain interprets the scene as a miniature model rather than a real environment.
Digital filters attempt to recreate this effect in post-production.
The tilt-shift lens produces it optically in camera, which is why the result looks different.
