THவந்தாரை வாழ வைக்கும் சென்னை✨
You know what’s the most special thing about Chennai?
It’s home to Olive Ridley turtles.🐢
They travel across the ocean, wander who knows how far, and yet… when it’s time, they come back here to namma Chennai. To these same beaches. Every year. I still can’t fully wrap my head around that.
Between January and April, when the city sleeps, turtles come in to lay their eggs. And somewhere behind them, people walk the beach, patiently looking for tracks, protecting nests, moving eggs to safer places, and later helping tiny hatchlings find their way to the sea.
So much respect to the people who keep doing this without noise or praise. Credits to @supriyasahujs ma’am (An absolute wonder woman, i wish to share her passion in the future),@treefoundationindia - Dr Supraja Dharini, @sstcn.chennai - Students’ Sea Turtle Conservation Network, @saveaturtle.chennai, Chennai Wildlife Department, forest staff, students, volunteers… so many hands, so many sleepless nights.
Only 1 in 1000 hatchlings makes it to adulthood. That fact hurts a little.
As an international student myself, i know no matter where i go my heart still finds Chennai and the same goes to these turtles, they always belong to Chennai.
Its in our nature to welcome and protect anyone who sets foot in our land, “வந்தாரை வாழ வைக்கும்” right?.. So i hope we protect more of these baby Turtles who are born in our land for millions of years to come. End of the day they are ‘nambha paiyan/ponnu’❤️
