I finally published my dissertation! … sort of. It’s now published in the Whole Earth Redux, a new journal that publishes new perspectives on Whole Earth articles from the archive. My piece, Corporate Corporeal, is a 150 word synthesis of my overall (200 page) paper. I’m proud it’s now out there! 🌐 Information about Whole Earth Redux: After working with the Internet Archive and the Long Now Foundation to launch the Whole Earth Index (wholeearth.info), the first complete online archive of the Whole Earth Catalog and its subsequent imprints, Gray Area released an open call for new essays and short stories that respond to an artifact from the Index. The resulting collection excavates Whole Earth’s deeper histories, explores its relevance to our present moment, and imagines the alternate futures it might inspire. Whole Earth Redux is published by Gray Area with generous support from the Incite Institute (@incite.columbia) at Columbia University. Jess at @larimer_county_extension gave an awesome Soil Health class as part of the Climate Smart, Future Ready Knowledge Break series from @larimercounty This one hour class included a water column demonstration, where tilled soil and regenerative soil were both used to show the impact of organic matter on soil retention. The big takeaways? Building organic matter and protecting your soil lead to nutrient dense crops and long-term production gains. How do you build organic matter? Make sure your soil has a cover crop. Root structures can help draw water down into the soil and increase water retention even in drought conditions. These plants can also serve other purposes, like breaking up soil or drawing nitrogen out of the air (nitrogen fixing). Kill them off or plant in them when you're ready for your main crop. And/Or Amend with compost regularly. Compost is rich in microbial activity and decomposed organic matter that can improve soil structures and provide robust nutrient profiles. Building healthy, regenerative soil leads to high nutrient density foods for our local community. Join us in taking climate action today. Advanced Sedimentology (GEOL3104) students course spent Saturday, March 14, traversing the upper reaches of the Rio Minho River, examining outcrops of the Late Cretaceous Slippery Rock Formation and Guinea Corn Formation. Along the way, they interpreted changes in sedimentary environments linked to relative sea-level fluctuations, observed a diverse assemblage of rudist bivalves, and identified a potential event bed related to the Cretaceous–Paleogene mass extinction. The trip was led by Prof. Simon Mitchell, with support from Mrs Natalie Robinson-Fraser and Mr Matthew Rahamut.

We consume resources—water, food, energy, forests, and carbon sinks—faster than Earth can regenerate them, leading to ecological overshoot, climate change, biodiversity loss, and resource stress. While technology and efficiency help, population growth multiplies environmental impact and cancels out these gains. Unruh effect Hey, mates! I want to touch on another breathtaking phenomenon similar to the Hawking radiation. This one is called the Unruh effect. ⠀ 💥The Unruh effect is the hypothetical prediction that an accelerating observer will observe a thermal bath whereas an inertial observer (with constant velocity) would observe none. ⠀ In other words, the background appears to be warm from an accelerating reference frame. Weird, right? ⠀ Let’s look at how it’s happening. ⠀ When we accelerate, we produce an event horizon behind us. It can never catch up to us but the Unruh radiation it generates can. ) ⠀ Approximately at the same time when Hawking discovered his phenomenon three other researchers Fulling, Davies, and Unruh were looking at one similar effect. They were studying how quantum fields change depending on whether or not an observer is accelerating. ⠀ So they worked in flat spacetime not curved as Hawking but as we know from Einstein: acceleration~gravity ~curvature. So it was smart to consider a moving non-inertial reference frame. ⠀ These guys found that acceleration cuts off your causal access to a region of the Universe. It creates a type of Event Horizon. ⠀ As we now know the presence of horizons distorts the quantum vacuum in a way that can create particles. You knew that, right? 😉 ⠀ ❗️Interesting that accelerating worldline is curved! (swipe left) Try to watch PBS episode about Unruh effect for visualisation (it’s catchy). ⠀ Actually that event horizon is called Rindler horizon after one smart Austrian physicist Rindler. ⠀ Maths part: so called Bogolubov transformations from inertial Minkowski spacetime to accelerating Rindler spacetime lead to the particles creation in an accelerating reference frame. (bold ones, try to repeat them) ⠀ ➡️Reading this text, right now you are surrounded by this Unruh particles ) but it’s a tiny amount of them.
