MAHome of BLACKBEARD the Pirate and FIRST Town in NC? 🏴☠️🏘️ Did you know that the small port town of Bath, NC is known as the home of Blackbeard? This beautiful town is rich with so much history, and it is also North Carolina’s oldest incorporated town as well!
From 1705 until 1722, Bath was the first capital of North Carolina before permanent government institutions were established in New Bern! In 1705, this area was incorporated as the town of Bath, and this land sits right on Bath Creek that leads to the Pamlico River. Here you can find the oldest church building in the state of North, Carolina constructed in 1734 which is St. Thomas Church, and Bath did house the first public library in the colony founded in 1700!
Some more on Blackbeard: Edward Teach was his real name, and he was a notorious English pirate in the Caribbean Sea during the 18th century. It is said he lived in Bath in 1718 with a royal pardon, and later died in Ocracoke, NC! Now, many years onward, he is one of the most well known pirate names ever!
Now, the towns population is 249 (as of 2010), and it is carefully curated to hold its historic roots. Take your time during your visit to read all of the historic signs that riddle the streets even though it won’t take you too long! 🫶🏻
