I think screen-time has benefits that absolutely should be balanced with normal child development (ex. Language, social/emotional, cognitive, motor, and visual development). We can use screen time as a way to connect with our kids and have the TV be a Medium to a game or activity. In my podcast "Co-watching benefits when using screen-time," I go over ways to make the television work for you and your child. Even when we aren't co-watching (I know it happens). I also discuss WHEN to start co-watching and when to avoid screen-time altogether to balance healthy infant/toddler development. I get it, as a mom of 3 kids and a pediatric ophthalmologist, the struggle to limit screen time while also getting a free mom — No parent shaming here. I get it, as a mom of 3 kids and a pediatric ophthalmologist, the struggle to limit screen time while also getting a free moment to do the dishes or fold laundry seems impossible. And there are wonderfully educational shows out there like Ms. Rachel (who I know some parents truly credit with helping their kids so much). But for the sake of their neurological and visual development, the overall recommendation is that for babies under 2 years old to not have any screen time at all, other than FaceTime. For kids between 2-5 years old, the recommendation is a maximum of 1 hour/day (I think I accidentally said at least when i meant at most an hour a day). For kids older than 5 years old, I recommend creating a family media plan where you sit down with your child and agree upon what works for your family in terms of screen time and device use. Helpful tips for older kids : 1. As much as possible, co-watch programs with your child, airplay or use your TV to stream instead of giving them a device, especially if they are younger. 2. Time spent outdoors has been shown to be protective against nearsightedness. So balance time spent reading or on screens with time outdoors. 3. Get your kids to take breaks every 20 minutes, following the 20-20-20 rule - every 20 minutes, take a 20 second break where you look at an object 20 feet away. 4. Make sure kids hold their digital devices at least 18-24 inches away 5. Remind them to blink.
