Swimming in the rain can be dangerous because storms often bring sudden changes in weather and water conditions. Rain can make the water colder and rougher, reducing visibility and increasing the risk of cramps or fatigue. If you’re in the ocean, rainfall can also trigger stronger currents and unpredictable waves, making it harder to swim back to shore.
More critically, rain is often accompanied by lightning, which can strike open water and travel across its surface, posing a serious electrocution risk. Additionally, heavy rainfall can wash pollutants and bacteria into pools, lakes, or oceans, increasing the chances of waterborne illnesses. It’s safest to wait until the rain and any potential storm have fully passed before getting into the water.
