Will’s fate has been hinted at all along.
Rewatching S5.1 makes some moments feel way less random. When Mike explains dungeon crawls to Holly, he casually mentions fighting monsters, evil wizards, and sorcerers. Monsters line up with the Demogorgons, the evil wizard is clearly Vecna, and Mike himself has called Will the Sorcerer before. That line feels like quiet foreshadowing, not just nostalgia talk. Add to that Will’s moment in E4 where he taps into the hive, kills Demogorgons, and mirrors El’s nosebleed scene—but does it in the opposite way. It almost feels intentional, like the show is visually hinting that Will stands on the other side of the same power.
But that doesn’t necessarily mean Will becomes “evil.” If anything, it feels more tragic than that. Vecna underestimated him, used him, and still doesn’t fully understand the strength Will draws from love and connection. If Will does clash with the others, it may not be betrayal but possession, control, or manipulation—another test of whether he can finally break free on his own. His story has always been about survival and self-acceptance, and the real payoff wouldn’t be turning him into a villain, but letting him face the darkness head-on and choose himself.

Interesting Fact:
Will’s character is heavily inspired by classic 80s “missing child” stories like The Body (which became Stand By Me) and Poltergeist. The Duffers wanted him to feel like a real kid rather than a plot device, so they built his personality around creativity, sensitivity, and feeling slightly out of step with everyone else. Noah Schnapp recorded many of Will’s breathing and panic sounds in a studio after filming, to make the Upside Down scenes feel extra real. Also, Will’s connection to the Upside Down wasn’t originally planned to last so long, but fans responded strongly to his vulnerability, so the writers deepened that thread into a core part of the show’s mythology.
