In an era of rapidly evolving technology, we need to decouple jobs from identity. The workforce today’s students will enter will be unrecognizable. But perhaps more importantly, we shrink dreams into job descriptions. Kids don’t think in terms of jobs. We bring that to them. We ask them what they want to be, but we don’t ask them who they want to be at all.

Here’s the simple framework: 1. Date: When it happened (so you have a timeline of impact). 2. Project Description: What the project or task actually was. 3. Your Contribution: What you did. Not the team. Not the department. YOU. 4. Stakeholders: Who was involved or benefited. 5. Contribution to Company Goals: How it supported revenue, efficiency, customer satisfaction, team success, etc. 6. Notes: this could be feedback, results, data, or anything you want to remember later. Do this weekly and watch how easy your next review, raise request, or job search becomes. On average, 39% of our skills could become obsolete or need to be transformed by 2030 (World Economic Forum 2025 Jobs report). We have to be willing to learn and continue to evolve our skills. We also have to expect our roles to change. I know it’s overwhelming. But you can start anywhere: watching free YouTube videos, attending sessions your company is hosting, using AI on your own. AI is a general purpose technology, these technologies change society at a foundational level. Even if the technology stopped progressing, the AI that exists today will still lead to a lot of disruption in the workplace. I personally do not think leaders are sufficiently addressing the impact AI will have on the workforce. More on this soon. My biggest advice is do not wait until the last minute to learn. Once you start engaging with AI you can see it’s not as overwhelming as it may seem! We engage with these tools in our natural language. I will do my best to continue to share and inform.
