THOne question we hear quite often is how to actually get your worm castings out of a wormery.
Worm castings are the real gold of a wormery. It’s the rich, natural fertiliser produced by your worms as they break down organic material. Knowing when they’re ready and how to harvest them properly can make a big difference!
When castings are ready, they should look dark, crumbly and earthy, almost like fine coffee grounds. At that stage most of the food waste has been processed and the worms will usually have moved upwards to the next tray of fresher bedding and food. What’s left behind is organic matter (the castings.)
That’s when you can carefully separate the castings from the worms and use them in your garden.
Worm castings are packed with beneficial microorganisms and plant-available nutrients, making them one of the best natural soil improvers you can add to pots, beds and borders.
Used as a top dressing or mixed into soil, they help improve soil structure, support healthy root development and boost plant growth naturally.
If you’re running a wormery at home, harvesting your own castings is one of the most rewarding parts of the process.
