TRDay 221 of my calendar year triple crown and I’ve reached the end of the Continental Divide Trail!
This is the only trail that I’ll be able to do start to finish in one go: the other two I’ve had to skip around to avoid extreme snow/ice.
Tomorrow I fly out to Vermont to finish the Appalachian Trail.

FR💔 30 years later, Dusty is still behind bars. In 1996, Dusty Turner was convicted of crimes he did not commit. The case against him was based on the false statements of the real perpetrator, Billy Joe Brown, his Navy SEAL swim buddy. It was an entirely circumstantial case.
In 2002, Brown confessed to his lawyer and mother. In 2008, Brown testified to acting alone and a Circuit Court ruled that Dusty had NO ROLE in the murdxr or in the restraining of the victim. In 2009, the Court of Appeals granted Dusty a WRIT OF ACTUAL INNOCENCE - the first in Virginia based on non-biological evidence.
On appeal this decision was overturned in order to uphold Dusty‘s convictions despite the fact that the prosecution‘s original theory at trial had been proven wrong.
💥Update💥
Dusty was granted parole on 1/7/2026, however the Commonwealth of Virginia is stalling his release. In the last week, the Parole Board has ordered that he NOT be allowed to walk out of prison gates and instead transported directly to his probation office. (FULL DETAILS, see recent posts).

FR💔 At just 18 years old, Dustin “Dusty” Turner swore an oath to serve his country. By 19, he had completed one of the most grueling training programs in the world: Basic Underwater Demolition SEAL training.
Six months later, his life was derailed: Dusty witnessed his teammate, Billy Brown, murder Jennifer Evans. It happened instantly. In a moment of panic and misplaced loyalty, Dusty helped Brown cover up his crime. Unable to keep the secret, he confided in his warrant officer, who ordered him to cooperate with police. When Brown learned Dusty told the police the truth, he implicated Dusty in the crime.
Fueled by a media frenzy, tunnel-vision investigators, and prosecutors eager to make a name, Dusty was wrongfully convicted and sentenced to 82 years—solely on circumstantial evidence and a theory that defied the facts of the case. Brown, tried separately, received 72 years.
In 1999, Brown confessed to his mother and lawyer that he was the sole perpetrator. Brown later gave testimony and admitted in court that he acted alone. (pinned video)
In 2008, in the same court that convicted Dusty, a judge ruled he had NO ROLE in Jennifer Evans’ death. But instead of setting him free after the Court of Appeals granted him a writ of actual innocence, the Attorney General appealed, which ultimately led to a reversal of the writ of innocence. Dusty is still in prison today, where he has been for the last 30 years.
