Here’s an early example of an FPGA - The XC3090 is one of Xilinx’s early FPGA implementations, preceded by their first FPGA, the XC2064 in 1985. The XC3090 is from the XC3000 series of FPGAs which was available a few years later. The XC3000 series of FPGAs ranged from 2,000 logic gates with the XC3020 all the way up to 9,000 logic gates on the XC3090. - Groups of gates are arranged into similar structures called Configurable Logic Blocks, which the XC3090 has 320. The Logic blocks can be configured to perform any Boolean function of the inputs into the CLB. The outputs of CLBs can feed into the inputs of other CLBs, making more complex logic functions. - Coming up next are some more microscope photos of this part as it enters into the #ComponentsCloseUp Series at number 296. I finally got my hands on the @digilentinc cmod s7 fpga dev board with an @amd xilinx Spartan 7 chip. The first thing to load clearly has to be the hello world of electronics: the led blink. The first thing you notice about the Vivado IDE workflow is the several steps required to implement such a simple thing. But this should come as no surprise. Unlike microcontrollers, where it is a matter of simply dumping a set of machine code data into the memory of the uC, in FPGAs several steps have to be carried out: the creation of a constraints file in which the physical pins are associated with the names used, the writing of the code with a Hardware Description Language (I decided to use SystemVerilog), the synthesis in which the code is translated into hardware i.e. registers and logic, the implementation of the hardware in the chosen chip, the generation of the bitstream to be loaded, and finally the loading. Because of the steep learning curve and high cost, FPGAs are little used by electronics hobbyists.
