A peaceful July morning garden walk… but there’s more going on here than meets the eye. This new west border was designed to balance bold structure with soft, layered plantings—using principles we rely on again and again in our garden: ✔️ Anchor with evergreens for year-round interest ✔️ Weave in hydrangeas for reliable blooms and seasonal drama ✔️ Soften with grasses and perennials for texture and movement ✔️ Repeat colors and shapes to guide the eye and create cohesion This space faces mixed conditions—hot sun, part shade, and tricky soil. So we chose plants that can handle it all without demanding constant attention. From design to plant selection, we wanted this border to feel lush and intentional, even in its first year. And in the morning light? It’s giving exactly what we hoped for. 🎥 Save this if you’re dreaming up a new garden bed. 📍 Zone 6A | Upstate NY Pondless Waterfall design and install by @deckers_pondscapes #thanksforgrowingwithus #gardenborders #gardenplanning #julygarden #zone6gardening #perennialdesign #hydrangeas #gardenlayers #cottagegardenstyle #lowmaintenanceplants #gardendesignprinciples #growformegardening #provenwinners #pwcolorchoice #david_austin_roses #gardeners #gardenersofinstagram

I'm growing in zone 5b/6a, and we still have a good amount of snow on the ground. BUT, I'm not waiting till MAY to plant my garden! No way! I got to great lengths to get my plants in the ground sooner 😉 Only cold hardy crops can go out this early in this kind of makeshift low tunnel, though, because we still will get freezing nights even under cover. ▶️YouTube video on pre-warming your gardens coming out this Sunday (March 16th). Just because the garden is growing does not mean you should stop planting! Things you should keep in mind when sowing seeds later in the season. -Know your last frost date. This will help you to figure out which plants you still have time to start. - When choosing seeds, consider fast growing varieties to get the most out of your plants. -This video did not touch on frost hardy plants but it is a good time to start thinking about your fall garden plants like broccoli, kale, peas and cabbage #gardening #eatwhatyougrow #zone6a #vegtablegarden #smallhomestead

Here’s how I’m going to overwinter my eucalyptus!🤞🏼🌿 Cut down the plants, leaving the thick main stems. Anything that would touch or be near the plastic tunnel will be at risk. Heavy mulch and/or wood chips/leaves to keep the soil and roots warm. Wrap the exposed stems with frost cloth. This will be more important once we reach below freezing temperatures. The eucalyptus plants will live under our plastic low tunnels all bundled up throughout winter. I will check on them constantly 😅 I’m feeling pretty confident about everything, but this is also my first time. Just incase, I’ve started more eucalyptus seeds. Which are very easy to germinate and grow! . . . . . #fowlcreekfarm #eucalyptus #overwintering #flowerfarm #cutflowers #cutflowerfarm #zone6a

Planting thousands of tulips is no joke y’all. It looks like a ton of work because it absolutely is a ton of work. I’ve been picking tulips non stop for the last few weeks. Our cooler is packed to the top and we’re filling subscriptions + orders with the most beautiful tulips— fresh from the gardens! Next up, ranunculus! I planted a few thousand of those too! Stick around 😉 . . . . . #flowerfarming #flowers #gardengrown #gardeninspiration #gardengram #cutflowergrden #flowergarden #zone6a #springflowers #pittsburghpa #pennsylvania

Spacing: I plant my mums 14”-16” apart. Even grown from small cuttings these will be huge, bushy plants by the fall! ☺️ Cutting back: Before early July, cut your plants in half. This encourages bushier growth which means more stems/flowers later! You can see me cutting back two different sized plants in this reel. The first is a new cutting planted in May and then cut back at the end of June. The other clip is me cutting back some at the same time that have been in the ground a couple seasons- more established plants just means I use a hedge trimmer for ease! 😆 How to ensure your mums survive the winter and become perennials: 1. Grow varieties hardy to your zone (I will share my personal fave list this next week!). If you are growing varieties that are not hardy to your zone, you can help keep them warmer in the winter with mulch plus frost cloth or to be extra safe (I’d recommend this) you can dig one of each variety up before winter, place into a pot, and keep somewhere cool like a garage/basement over the winter. Later winter you can take cuttings from these “mother plants” and have plenty to plant again in the spring! To see a reel on this you can comment MOREMUMS ☺️ 2. The soil they are planted in *needs* to be well draining (they will not survive in soggy soil over the winter! If you have heavy clay soil like me, you may want to consider raised beds of some sort for them.) 3. I place mulch around my plants late fall/early winter after they are done flowering for extra winter insulation. Using in the vase: Harvest when flowers are mostly open- they do not open much after harvesting! 💐 Please feel free to let me know if you have any questions. ☺️ My next reel will highlight some varieties I really love! #growflowers #flowerfarmer #flowerfarm #backyardgarden #cottagegarden #gardentips #gardeninspo

Here’s how we built our cattle panel trellises 🤠 the 2024 garden had 3 and the 2025 garden will have at least 1 more!
