ATSome people can’t truly grasp just how fast elite sprinters are. This is Su Bingtian, who ran the fastest 60m split ever at 6.29.
Notice how aggressive & forceful his contacts are.
This is how he’s able to generate MASSIVE ground reaction forces in the first half of ground contact for faster sprint speeds.
This happens through a few key mechanisms:
-Fast thigh angular velocities + foot tangential velocities
This a byproduct of having higher thigh amplitudes (greater ROM) during flight, which gives them more room to “whip from the hip.”
Fast thigh angular velocities also create high foot tangential velocities, aka how fast the foot is at touchdown (both its vertical and horizontal components). This is KEY for achieving faster sprint speeds.
-High lower limb stiffness
It’s crucial to have the eccentric capacity, tendon stiffness, & pre-tension/co-contraction abilities to resist excessive flexion during ground contact, which will increase GCT.
Elite sprinters have high levels of system stiffness, especially in the ankle, which is product of their neuromuscular RFD (active muscle stiffness) and tendon stiffness.
Ultimately, this is how they generate higher GRF during the first half of ground contact.
This then allows them to generate the necessary impulse to satisfy flight time needs for stride length FASTER, which decreases GCT & increases stride frequency
