It may seem like a small thing but if you think about what it means to have a speaking child who can use words to share an array of emotions… contrast that with a kid who is feeling all the things but lacks the ability to use spoken language. What joy that he can tell us exactly what he finds yummy- not just eating to eat, but letting us know he finds this croissant particularly yummy. I’m not going to lie, when we were introduced to AAC devices we didn’t get it. Let me simplify this- it’s most often just an iPad with software on it. There are different apps- we’re currently using #Proloquo2Go The first few months were frustrating- how was this going to help us, why was it so complicated, wouldn’t this make him dependent and less prone to speaking?? But I’ll admit I was wrong. Little man navigates through this thing finding words I didn’t even know were on there. When we do songs, he’ll tap through as many of the words as he can match. Just cos he doesn’t speak, doesn’t mean he doesn’t understand. Even better, he sometimes not only touches the word, he mouths along with it- effectively increasing moments when we actual hear him speak. I still hope for a time when we don’t need this, but the alternative wasn’t good for him or us. All the Frustration as we tried to guess what he was trying to share. We try to never leave home without this and while we could load the software to other devices, we’ve been advised that it’s best to have just one dedicated device that only serves as his communication device as opposed to a tablet for watching cartoons/playing games. It may be an imperfect tool but it’s a very useful one. #autismawarenessmonth #autismacceptancemonth #autismisbeautiful #neurodiverse #autismfamily #autismparents #autismawareness #aacdevice #nonverbal #nonspeaking #nonverbalautism #nonspeakingautism #onthespectrum #autistickids

If you told me a couple of years ago that my non speaking daughter would be fully participating in selling girl scout cookies, I would be wondering how that would be possible. It has taken a lot of work for her to learn how to use her aac device for communication but she is doing amazing! Girl Scouts is an inclusive organization for all girls with a focus on diversity. The program adapts to individual needs and offers flexible, interest-based opportunities. #girlscouts #aac #communicationdevice #hopeforhie #specialneeds

We’ve met so many amazing people on here, and a lot of them are parents of nonverbal autistic children who wanted to know what age Jaiden started talking and/or holding conversations with me after being considered nonverbal early on in our Autism journey. In short, Jaiden started talking at around 4 years old. Up until then, he communicated through babbling, echolalia (the repetition of words, sounds, and phrases), and vocal stimming as attempts to interact and express himself. These early vocalizations are not meaningless and should be supported as they play a significant role in developing a child’s language skills. Some ask what I did to help Jaiden talk, but honestly, there’s no blueprint, no one-size-fits-all approach in this journey. Even after he started talking, it took more time for him to fully understand, build his vocabulary, and hold conversations. I will say that Speech Therapy also helped a lot. We started through Early Intervention, had sessions multiple times a week, and continued from around age 3 ½ until the end of 5th grade, when I was told he no longer needed it. While it’s a blessing to hear our children speak, what really matters is connecting with them in ways that meet them where they are and make them feel the most supported, seen, and included. Whether it’s through an AAC device, sign language, or even a hug or smile, it’s beautiful and important because it comes from our kids. Even when he was nonverbal, I always talked to him and held “conversations” with him because I knew he could hear me and I wanted to make sure he was part of the conversation rather than always outside of it. These days, it’s hard to get him to stop talking 😂 Please remember that’s what’s for our kids won’t miss them, in their own time and their own ways. And we don’t need to follow general timelines. We take things a day at a time with lots of love, patience, faith, tenacity, and teamwork! 💙 @jai_at_play #autism #autismparents #nonverbalautism #viral #relatable

Not every autistic child communicates the same way — and that’s exactly why support should never be one-size-fits-all. For some children, an AAC device gives them a voice. For others, a service dog provides regulation, safety, and confidence. And together, these supports can create more independence, connection, and inclusion. Communication is not only spoken words. Support is not about “fixing.” It’s about giving children the tools they need to thrive in a world that often isn’t built for them. Every child deserves to be understood. 🤍 #autismacceptance #aacawareness #servicedog #inclusion #autismmom NeurodiversityAffirming InclusiveCoach AutismSupport NonspeakingAutistic InclusionMatters

We do not limit screen time for my autistic son. This is why. Screen time for my autistic son means REGULATION. It gives him a safe escape from the sometimes overwhelming world. It is a predictable break, something he can control when he has a sensory overload. Screen time for my autistic son means COMMUNICATION. A way to get words out when his voice can’t (AAC Device). As a GLP it is a way for him to get exposed to more language, more phrases more scripts to memorize. Screen time for my autistic son means UNDERSTANDING THE WORLD a little better. It is a tool to visually get social stories. A way he can see examples of social interactions and daily life occurrences without feeling overwhelmed. Screen time for my autistic son means CONTROL and a SAFE SPACE to keep what he treasures. He stores his favorite books, he navigates his favorite apps, he knows how to access his favorite songs and shows. It gives him independence and a sense autonomy that otherwise can feel frustrating in other areas. What are ways your autistic child uses or benefits from screen time? Share in the comments and follow us for more of our autism journey 🫶🏻 *** Everything I share about our ASD journey is our personal experience comes with the most respect and good intentions. I am not a professional or expert. Every family experiences autism in a different way and all perspectives are valid. I believe in advocacy and working towards a better more inclusive and embracing world. If a child needs access to their AAC device for communication then we can’t take it away from them because WE are overstimulated by it. That is their way to use their voice, if they were vocalizing the same word over and over with their voice we wouldn’t be able to take that away. Especially if an accommodation listed in their IEP is that they have unrestricted access to their device. Can it be overwhelming when you’re trying to talk to a different student and hear “PIZZA PIZZA PIZZA PIZZA” in the background? Absolutely. Instead of taking the device away you could start to work on teaching them what volumes are good for which environments: Outside: AAC on full volume Inside: AAC on medium volume Inside the library: AAC on low volume #aac #aacdevice #cerebralpalsy #autism #downsyndrome

Remix? 🫣 Let’s reframe how we view stimming, especially during AAC use!! Stimming isn’t “getting in the way” of communication… it often supports it! When a child is stimming while using AAC, it can mean: • They’re regulating their body to stay engaged • They’re processing language (AAC is hard work!) • They’re excited and motivated to communicate •They’re exploring their device and learning 🧩🗣️✨🪩 #slp #speechtherapy #autism #aacdevice #specialeducationteacher
