Pencil Hack! Use Stickers to Build In-hand Manipulation Skills This activity puts a fun spin on helping kids develop in-hand manipulation skills, focusing on shift and rotation. Typically developing kids master this skill between the ages of 6 and 7. But many of our OT kiddos, or students with fine motor delays, fail to develop this skill. They compromise by using two hands because they can not manage to flip their pencil using just one. As you can imagine, this compromises efficiency during written tasks. If you’re thinking about oobleck, you’re right! Handwriting foundation lays in sensory play! It’s because this engaging form of play involves motor skills, grasp development and coordination. We like oobleck specifically because this non Newtonian liquid changes forms depending on pressure. This is a cool effect not only from a sensory perspective but also because its consistency allows to practice pressure control and works on all those intrinsic hand muscles. Next time you’re thinking to give your child a pen and paper for improving “pencil grasp” remember this and prep a sensory bin instead! O = Ocular Motor Skills 👀 Did you know OT’s work on vision too? Follow along as I share the ABC’s of OT, simple tips and core values that support kids in meaningful, child-centered ways from a pediatric occupational therapist! ✨Functional vision is so much more than just seeing clearly. It’s how our visual system (eyes, brain, and neural pathways) work together to allow us to process and respond to the world around us. These skills are essential for reading, writing, attention, and coordination. Ocular motor skills (how our eyes move, track, and work together) are a key part of that system. It’s a growing problem in our kids, I’m seeing more and more kids with convergence insufficiency and weak eye muscles. When ocular motor skills are delayed, it can look like:
• Losing place while reading
• Avoiding visually demanding tasks
• Difficulty focusing or sitting still
• Seeming clumsy or uncoordinated
• Trouble catching or throwing
• Bumping into things during play Here are 3 essential ocular motor skills every child needs: ▫️ Visual Tracking: Following moving objects smoothly, like reading a line of text without losing place or tracking a ball in play. ▫️ Saccades: Quick eye jumps between objects- crucial for scanning words, shifting focus quickly, copying from the board, or noticing details in busy environments. ▫️ Convergence/Divergence: The ability for both eyes to work together when focusing near and far, like reading a book up close, watching the teacher across the room, or catching a ball. As a pediatric OT, I build these skills through simple, playful activities, no fancy tools required. Supporting ocular motor development sets kids up for success in school and in life 🩵 #abcsofot #ocularmotorskills #functionalvision
