It uses extremely short-wavelength light (13.5 nanometers) to print incredibly tiny transistor patterns onto silicon wafers, enabling the production of the world’s most powerful microchips. The system combines high-energy lasers, plasma physics, ultra-precise mirrors made by Carl Zeiss SMT, vacuum engineering, and nanometer-level motion control. Each machine weighs around 180 tons, contains over 100,000 parts, and costs hundreds of millions of dollars. It is widely considered the most complex commercial manufacturing machine in the world and a critical technology behind modern processors and AI chips. Les vrais goats sont européens. ASML est la seule entreprise au monde capable de produire des machines EUV (Extreme Ultraviolet), qui permettent de graver des circuits intégrés extrêmement petits, de l’ordre du nanomètre. Elle dispose d’une avance considérable sur ces concurrents, mais quel est son secret? Eh bien il n’y en a pas vraiment. Au fil des ans, ASML a acquis un savoir faire inégalé et investi tous les ans massivement en recherche et développement, on parle de milliards de dollars… On trouve en son sein les meilleurs cerveaux du monde, et des process de production uniques, presque impossible à reproduire par ses concurrents. Elle dispose aussi de partenariats exclusifs avec des fournisseurs clés comme Carl Zeiss, le fabricant allemand de systèmes optiques, rendant très difficile l’entrée à de nouveaux acteurs. La complexité de ses machines est telle qu’il faudrait des années à d’autres acteurs pour en faire une copie, et pendant ce temps, ASML aurait encore pris de l’avance. Mais ASML ne livre pas seulement les machines, elle livre aussi le savoir faire de ses techniciens qui vont assurer leur maintenance chez ses clients. Le travail de l’entreprise ne s’arrête donc après la livraison mais continue tout au long de la durée de vie de la machine. Bien qu’Apple design en interne ses propres puces, elle les fait fabriquer par des entreprises externes, comme TSMC, elle-même cliente d’ASML. Même si elle voulait les produire en interne, cela lui demanderait des investissements massifs et des changements stratégiques profonds. Une machine fabriquée par ASML coûte entre 150 et 200 millions de $, sans inclure les coûts d’installation et de maintenance… Et même si elle faisait l’acquisition des machines, il faudrait qu’elle développe un savoir faire complexe pour assurer la production des puces: gestion des procédés, matériaux, environnement ultra propres etc. TSMC ou Samsung par exemple ont développé ces compétences sur des décennies ce qui leur confère un avantage immense.
