Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is more than just arthritis. It is a chronic, auto-inflammatory disease of the spinal joints and other joints, like the shoulders, hips, feet, and knees. Ankylosing spondylitis may create further havoc in the body by causing severe fatigue, eye pain (uveitis), IBD, and even heart or lung problems. Despite the complexity and whole-body involvement of AS, there is hope that you can live a decent life with this disease—it will, however, require preparation and A LOT of resiliency. BUT it can be done by taking it one step and one day at a time... and I am going to prove it to myself and my children! The BEST thing you can do is exercise! Doctors will tell you that exercise is a critical part of the treatment of ankylosing spondylitis. Exercises will help improve your posture and can also lessen the possible long-term complications of the disease. You don’t have to workout like me, because I’ve been actively in the gym my whole life. But you can easily do exercises like walking, yoga, and swimming which are particularly beneficial for those with AS. In general, exercise will help lessen the disease’s impact on your life, and it may improve your mood as well. ✨She knows Friday’s are my injection days…(used to be every other till now it’s every Friday) I told her about 12 times yes it is but I won’t do my injection till after dinner. ….I kept asking why and she never answered.. She noticed I went to the freezer to get my ice pack and she automatically got up and followed me into my office. I asked her what she was doing she said “nothing mom mom” She insisted on holding my ice pack and the lid to my needle.. she wanted to be my support person as she knows it hurts me. This melts my heart that she is there to support me and help me when I need. She has such a big heart 💜 ‼️Yes I do my injections where my kids can see it… this is something I have to do every single week for the rest of my life… so no I’m not going to hide it. We are an open house no hiding things‼️ 👉🏻My disability is invisible to many but my family can see it in me daily and having their support means the world to me… because honestly some days just suck with it. 😩

To the naked eye I am just a lucky fit young guy… In reality for over 13 years I have had to call out of work multiple times because of Ankylosing Spondylitis, I’ve been up all night with back pain, I’ve limped around in pain all day, I’ve had a shoulder injury since I was 20. This has been a rollercoaster … but we are here and I can’t believe it. Small goals, I can’t stress it enough. A lot of people with ankylosing spondylitis spend years being told their pain is normal. AS is an inflammatory disease that can stiffen the spine, tighten the chest, weaken posture, and drain energy long before anything is visible on the outside. Early signs can look simple. Morning stiffness that lasts too long. Pain that gets better with movement instead of rest. Fatigue that makes no sense. Rib tightness that makes it hard to breathe deeply. None of that screams chronic inflammation, but that is exactly why so many people go undiagnosed for so long. Awareness is the only way this changes. Young adults get it. Women get it. Athletes get it. If your back pain keeps waking you up, if mornings feel like cement, or if your stiffness eases once you start moving, talk to a doctor who knows how to screen for AS. Early care can protect the spine and slow progression. You stretch because you’re stiff, but the stretch makes you sore, so you rest… which makes you stiffer. Pro tip for getting started: think gentle, not heroic. Five minutes counts. Warm up like you’re defrosting a frozen chicken, listen to your body (even when it’s dramatic), and stop before your joints start drafting a formal complaint. But good news: There are ways to ease the discomfort and take back some control. ✨ Here are 7 strategies to help you feel better: 1️⃣ Stretch it out: Gentle stretches and mobility drills can help you feel better and can also help you keep your mobility! 2️⃣ Extra support at night: A proper supportive mattress can work wonders for your spine, and a body pillow is great to keep your hips and sacrum feeling supported! 3️⃣ Heat therapy: A heating pad or warm Epsom salt bath can soothe those achy joints muscles. 4️⃣ Supplements: Give anti-inflammatory heroes like turmeric, and omega-3 a try, and glucosamine can also help your joints feel better. 5️⃣ Drink up: If you’re not a fan of pills, try turmeric tea for some of the same great benefits - or tart cherry juice have also been shown to help! 6️⃣ Complementary therapies: Acupuncture and massage can make a big difference, and make sure to try the less expensive home therapies such as foam rolling, a sensory stimulating mat (or even an acupressure mat!), and a massage gun. 7️⃣ Perk up your posture: An aligned spine = less strain. ⚡️LOVE SCARS⚡️Blog for #halloween … 👻 Those of you that know me know I’m really not one of those eternally positive people so this may sound a strange thing for me to post about, you may also remember my goth-phase and my ongoing love for heavy metal so, on that front, it may not sound strange at all but here’s why I’m never concerned about having a visible surgery scar….. Sadly the reality for so many people with chronic invisible illnesses is that we continue to be disbelieved, forgotten or learn to just suffer in silence because reactions are often so negative. Scars however, get much more positive reinforcement because there they are, right in your face as a visible representation of what is happening to you and what you have overcome. Whether your scar is from surgery or an accident, we all have different emotional connections around them, sometimes traumatic as I have dealt with in my massage work. But for me, I like my scars, they prove I was not “making it up” or exaggerating as I have been so often told just because I power through and choose not to lay in bed crying about it. I like them because finally I have a visual representation of pain which everyone can immediately understand.
