YOHow well do I need to know maths and physics to get a pilot license?
For everyone who is new here, my name is Yoko and I am currently getting my frozen ATPL license in the UAE ☺️
In order to get accepted for a pilot training program, flight schools might test your knowledge in certain subjects. In my personal opinion, the level of maths and physics that was needed in order to pass these entry level exams, was high school level. Some areas that I revised were trigonometry, angles, vectors, and mental maths. The challenge for me was to learn all the terms in English, since I attended high school in Germany.
Once I had passed all the assessments and started my theoretical pilot training, I was introduced to the 14 ATPL subjects.
Now bear in mind, some subjects will require maths and physics, others won't. For example, Aircraft Performance and Flight Planning will require you to be able to read, interpret and work with charts to find a result. For subjects like Mass & Balance, it will be useful to know how to rearrange formulas, switch between different units and have spatial understanding.
Of course, it helps if you have a certain interest in physics or a natural ability to work with numbers, but you don't have to be a Nobel Prize winner to be able to ace your flight training. Speaking from personal experience, I did not always enjoy physics in high school. I did get very good grades in the end, but I really had to motivate myself to study consistently to see those results. Mathematics is a different story. Somehow, I have always had a way with numbers, which is why Mass & Balance was one of my favourite ATPL subjects.
If I had to give you some big sister advice, I would say check out practice websites or even flight school websites, sometimes you will find mock exams for maths and physics available to download. Try them out and note down the areas you don't feel comfortable with. Seek help from friends or a personal tutor before taking your entry level exams. Once you've made it to flight school, you're not alone. Your instructors and class mates are there for you and they genuinely want you to succeed.

15 years after completing my ATPL exams, I had to fly to Ireland to take a VFR (Visual Flight Rules) communication exam to ‘unfreeze’ my ATPL - do I even remember any VFR phraseology or rules? 🙈
After some audio issues on my last video (thanks to music rights in that area) I’ve decided to keep this one completely song-free. Hope that’s okay and not boring x
