SKYDIVING SCARIES: Australia’s transport safety regulator shared footage on Thursday, December 11, of a skydiver’s reserve parachute becoming snagged on a plane wing mid-air over Queensland. The video was released as part of the findings of an Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) investigation into a skydiving incident over Tully Airport on September 20. The parachute jump was part of the ‘Big Ways at the Beach’ event where experienced parachutists completed large group formations. The ATSB said 17 parachutists were on board, ready for a “16-way formation jump” from 15,000 feet. As the first parachutist climbed out of the aircraft to jump, the handle of his reserve parachute snagged on a wing flap, damaging the plane’s “horizontal stabiliser.” The footage shows multiple angles of the parachute being deployed and the man being flung from the aircraft, with the parachute then wrapping around the tailplane. Another parachutist fell from the plane in the process. While hanging from the plane, the man was able to cut himself free with a knife, sending himself into freefall. He released his main parachute and landed safely, sustaining only minor injuries from the incident. The final report found the aircraft was not loaded properly, though it clarified that was not a cause of the accident. Australian Transport Safety Bureau via Storyful

The Australian Transport Safety Bureau has released vision of a near midair disaster, involving skydivers in far north Queensland in September earlier this year. A light plane took off from Tully Airport, south of Cairns, on September 20 with 17 parachutists on board. The group had been planning on completing a 16-way formation jump filmed by a parachuting camera operator. However, when the first parachutist stepped up to the open roller door, the handle of his reserve parachute snagged, accidentally deployed and pulled him out of the plane, hitting another man on the way out. The quick-thinking parachuter used a hook knife to cut 11 lines from the reserve parachute before it tore free from the plane. #skydive #parachute #ATSB #Queensland

The Australian Transport Safety Bureau has launched the investigation following the discovery aboard the aircraft registered VH-OQK at Sydney Airport. The A380 had flown from Sydney to Dallas-Fort Worth in Texas and returned before the device was discovered. As well as the ATSB probe, Qantas is conducting an internal investigation into why the work light was not accounted for during a maintenance task. The airline said that the work tool had no effect on the operation of the journeys the A380 flew. In December a wing slat broke off from an A380 during a Sydney to Los Angeles flight, which alarmed passengers who could see the wing through a cabin window. The so-called superjumbo, VH-OQC, had just returned to commercial service after more than five years in storage and maintenance, but Qantas assured customers the “structural mishap” did not compromise the safe operation of the flight. The A380 was immediately grounded on arrival into Los Angeles and has only returned to commercial operation in the past week. It’s understood the ATSB is examining the latest incident in the context of “tool management” and investigators are expected to examine how the work light ended up in the aircraft’s left wing, and whether the item was reported missing. In December 2023 a turning tool was left in the engine of a Qantas A380 and stayed there for 34 flights, as a result of a delayed start to the “lost tool procedure”. The tool was eventually found during a scheduled maintenance check, 26 days after it went missing. #qantas #sydney #dallas #aviation #planespotting

A skydiver in North Queensland, Australia experienced a terrifying mid-air emergency when his parachute became caught on the tail of a plane 15,000 feet above the ground. As he climbed out of the aircraft, his reserve parachute handle snagged on a wing flap, causing the parachute to deploy prematurely and yank him out of the plane. The chute then got tangled on the rear wing. According to the ATSB, the sudden drag drastically slowed the aircraft, making the pilot believe it had stalled. This triggered 13 other skydivers to immediately bail out of the plane. Dangling from the tail, the trapped parachutist managed to cut all 11 suspension lines, freeing himself. He then deployed his main parachute and landed safely with only minor injuries. The pilot issued a mayday and prepared to abandon the aircraft as well, but as he descended, he realized he could still control the plane. He ultimately managed to land it safely. #SkydivingAccident #AustraliaNews #NorthQueensland #AviationIncident #ParachuteMalfunction #PlaneEmergency #ATSB #ExtremeSports #SurvivalStory #breakingnews

A skydiving event in Queensland nearly turned fatal when a reserve parachute snagged on an aircraft wing mid-air, flinging a diver into the plane’s tail in a chaotic and terrifying sequence caught on video. 🛩️🪂🔥 Australia’s Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) released the footage as part of its investigation into the September 20 incident at the Big Ways at the Beach event near Tully Airport. Seventeen experienced parachutists were preparing for a 16-way formation jump from 15,000 feet when disaster struck. As the first jumper climbed out, the handle of his reserve parachute caught on a wing flap, instantly deploying the chute and slamming the diver into the aircraft’s horizontal stabilizer. The canopy then wrapped around the tailplane, causing another skydiver to fall unexpectedly as the scene spiraled out of control. Miraculously, the man managed to cut himself free with a knife while hanging from the aircraft, entering freefall before releasing his main parachute and landing safely. He suffered only minor injuries, an outcome investigators say could have been much worse. The ATSB noted the aircraft was improperly loaded, though clarified it was not a contributing factor in the accident. Still, the video underscores how even expert jumps can turn dangerous in seconds.
