Headstand is an advanced yoga pose, so it shouldn’t be “easy”. I practice headstand with almost all of the weight on my head (as was taught by Iyengar) however I do recognize the need to offer modifications for people with neck sensitivity. I call this modification “the toilet seat” - stack some stable blocks for your shoulders to rest on, and use your hands for stability. Just like sticking your head in the toilet. Flexibility 🆚 Strength Do you consider yourself a flexible or tight person? Feel free to share why. I began my bodyweight journey (calisthenics + yoga) around 7 years ago and I remember being “tight”. I can recall not being able to touch my toes, or sit in the floor without the need to round my spine. However, I have very little memory about my upper body flexibility back then so I recently looked at old videos of mine. I then realized I was extremely opened from the start (especially the shoulder & scapula joints). I clearly didn’t know this back then, and having little knowledge of how the body actually works, I proceded to stretch like a maniac. Mainly to achieve advanced Yoga poses to impress people I didn’t even know or care about… (topic for another time) Back to the point: this lack of knowledge and/or self-awareness led me to over-stretch mainly in passives ways. Nothing wrong with passive stretching, but for me it was causing way more problems than solutions. I suffered from extreme low back pain, got countless of shoulder dislocations, and even created a huge degree of scoliosis in my spine. In short, I was getting injured left and right. It’s been around 1 years I don’t stretch my shoulders, back, or chest. The most I’ve done is some shoulder extension work, but mostly active stuff. I feel better than ever, zero injuries, and have the best performance I’ve had since I started this journey. Take away: don’t stretch. Nah, real take away: don’t “just stretch” because you’ve been told to do it. Analyze your body and your unique conditions. Have clear goals and find what’s limiting to achieve them. Work on that. Filter the rest. Adjust overtime. I know this is hard to believe if you are on the tighter side, but just like me, there are countless of “hyper-mobile” individuals who might not be aware of this.
