Often times, escape behaviors pop up when therapy conditions fail to account for the individuals motivation, preferences, and need for choice.

Assent-based therapy doesn’t mean we avoid difficult work. It’s doesn’t mean play and stimming away ALL session long (a trendy topic for another day).
Instead, it means we keep a pulse on a child’s willing participation through those challenges and an eye out for signs that indicate we are doing too much too fast. Therapy will have difficult moments, that’s where growth happens. But when you empower learners with a sense of control, we shift from therapy that we do TO them, to therapy that we do WITH them 🤝🏼
