It’s strange how the heart works. You delete the chats, you block the number, you stop visiting the places you went together, but the memories—they don’t need permission to enter. They live inside you, quietly waiting for the perfect moment to remind you that you once cared too deeply, loved too intensely, trusted too blindly. And when they come, they don’t just remind you of the good moments, they haunt you with the pain, the betrayal, the nights you cried yourself to sleep hoping someone would understand the weight you carry inside.
You tell yourself you’re stronger now. And maybe you are. But strength doesn’t always mean silence. Strength doesn’t always mean pretending you’re fine when you’re breaking inside. Sometimes strength means admitting that you’re tired of fighting ghosts that no one else can see. That you’re tired of pretending that memories don’t still choke you when you try to breathe.
Healing is not about forgetting. Healing is about untangling the parts of you that still bleed when touched by the past. It’s about giving yourself permission to grieve what you lost, what you deserved but never got, and who you were before it all broke you. Healing is choosing to look at those memories and finally say, “You don’t control me anymore.”
And maybe today, right now, your soul is whispering the same thing mine once did: I don’t want to live haunted. I want to live free.
