Auditory Processing Disorder (APD) is a condition where the brain has difficulty processing and interpreting sounds, even though hearing is normal.   In this reel, Low Fang Yin highlights key symptoms of APD. While these symptoms may resemble those of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), they are not the same. APD involves difficulty with listening, while ADHD is characterised by attention challenges. They can occur together.   If you suspect APD, consult an audiologist for a comprehensive evaluation and diagnosis.   #NUHOtolaryngology #NUHENT #AuditoryProcessingDisorder #APD #APDAwarenessDay — Low Fang Yin is a Senior Speech Therapist from the Department of Otolaryngology – Head & Neck Surgery.

It provides a rare glimpse into how sensory and neurological processing affect functioning and thought through the eyes of a professional, parent, and woman who has experienced them firsthand. This book presents an informative, emotional, and empowering account of the challenges and struggles on the road to recovery- as well as the search for understanding, meaning, and faith. It enables you to step into the shoes of someone who has endured the types of sensory irregularities common in people with neurodiversity – including autism, ADHD, dyslexia, Irlen Syndrome, Auditory Processing Disorder, and more, and to gain understanding as to how to cope with these challenges and to compensate for them. Moving Forward will enlighten parents, professionals, and family members to better understand and assist the neurodivergent people they work with and love.

#understoodpartner Auditory Processing Disorder (APD) affects how the brain processes sound. People with APD can hear, but they struggle to understand and interpret the sounds correctly. Here are some common signs of APD ⬇️ 👂🏽Difficulty following conversations in noisy environments or group settings. 👂🏽Frequently asking for repetition or saying “what?” even though hearing is normal. 👂🏽Trouble understanding spoken instructions, especially multi-step directions. 👂🏽Misinterpreting similar-sounding words, leading to confusion. 👂🏽 Struggling to keep up with fast-paced conversations or overlapping speech. 👂🏽Difficulty distinguishing between sounds, such as “cat” and “cap.” 👂🏽Poor listening skills or appearing inattentive, especially in noisy settings. 👂🏽Challenges with reading, writing, and spelling, often tied to phonetic confusion. 👂🏽Delayed response to verbal questions, as more time is needed to process the information. 👂🏽Inconsistent performance in tasks that involve listening or auditory comprehension. Here are different types of learning difficulties explained briefly: 1. Dyslexia Dyslexia is a specific learning difficulty that primarily affects reading, spelling, and writing. Individuals with dyslexia often struggle with recognizing words, decoding written text, and understanding language, despite having average or above-average intelligence. 2. Dyscalculia Dyscalculia is a learning difficulty that affects a person’s ability to understand and work with numbers. People with dyscalculia may struggle with basic arithmetic, recognizing numerical patterns, and grasping mathematical concepts, even though they might be able to perform well in other subjects. 3. Dysgraphia Dysgraphia is a difficulty related to writing. People with dysgraphia may have trouble with handwriting, spelling, and organizing their thoughts on paper. It can affect both the physical process of writing and the ability to express ideas clearly in written form. 4. Auditory Processing Disorder (APD) APD affects how the brain processes auditory information. Individuals with this condition may have difficulty understanding speech, especially in noisy environments, despite having normal hearing. It can affect language comprehension, following directions, and distinguishing sounds. 5. Visual Processing Disorder This difficulty involves problems with interpreting visual information. People with visual processing disorder may struggle to recognize patterns, judge distances, or identify objects and their relationships in space, even though their eyesight is normal. 6. Nonverbal Learning Disabilities (NVLD) NVLD is a condition that affects the ability to understand nonverbal cues such as body language, facial expressions, and tone of voice. It also impacts spatial awareness and motor coordination, but individuals with NVLD typically have strong verbal skills. These are just a few examples of learning difficulties, and many people may experience more than one type. Each difficulty can vary in severity, and with the right support and accommodations, individuals can learn to manage their challenges. . . . For more info or appointments, DM us!

I’ve worn hearing aids for high-frequency hearing loss for almost 15 years, but they’ve never really helped me understand speech, especially in noisy situations. After I was diagnosed with ADHD, I randomly came across an article about auditory processing disorder (APD). It mentioned that a significant percentage of people with ADHD also have auditory processing challenges, and as I read through the symptoms, it felt like I was reading about myself. An APD assessment along with new hearing aids programmed specifically for my needs has been life-changing for me, and I’ll be starting auditory training soon to see if I can improve how my brain processes sound, especially speech in noisy environments. Let me know in the comments if you have (or suspect you might have) APD and what has and hasn’t worked for you. And follow along if you’d like to hear more about my experience with auditory training. 🖤 #apd #auditoryprocessingdisorder #adultadhd #hearingloss #adhdawareness

Struggling to Process What You Hear? 👂🧠 Auditory Processing Disorder (APD) isn’t just a childhood condition—it affects adults too. If you experience: ✅ Difficulty understanding speech in noisy environments ✅ Frequently asking people to repeat themselves ✅ Trouble following conversations, especially over the phone ✅ Sensory overwhelm in busy spaces ✅ Brain fog or fatigue from processing sounds …your nervous system may not be functioning at its best! The upper cervical spine plays a key role in how your brain processes sensory input. Misalignments in this area can disrupt nerve function, blood flow, and cerebrospinal fluid circulation, potentially affecting how your brain interprets sound. Upper cervical care focuses on restoring proper alignment to help your nervous system function optimally, which can improve auditory processing and overall brain performance. 💡 If you struggle with APD symptoms, an upper cervical evaluation could be the missing link! “I can hear, I just don’t understand sometimes…” Ever heard this from family? Usually this is a sign of a high frequency hearing loss. They hear easily one-on-one but throw in some background noise or someone talking from the next room and things just get mumbly. What’s really happening is that the person is having a tough time distinctly hearing soft consonant sounds (try sounding out SH, F, S, T, P). This is also why they rhyme what you said when they make a guess. Did you say tin, pin or fin? See how the T, P, and F are such soft sounds? And they fall right in that high frequency range so a loss in that region just washes them out. This is where hearing aids make things CLEARER, not just louder. This is also where the #earbrainconnection becomes critical because “When sound stops reaching the ear, the brain starts changing”- Me There are other types of hearing loss and other processing issues like auditory processing disorder that can cause issues understanding as well, but that high frequency loss is far and away the most common. #earbrainconnection #hearingloss #hearingaids #audiology #audpeeps #tedx @jess_ekstrom, @artshefalee, woodsongardnerbradley, @mrstaylor222, @mariahprinceallen, @heysohokid, @worthmorestrategies, @itscelsmart, @awartham, @missedwardsclt, @megan.b.miller, @the_nature_reset, @nia.luckey, @megghanthompsoncoaching, @saraholin_lumoleadership, @thecarolinaaponte, @tedxsugarcreekwomen #speechlanguagepathology #speech
