SIIt may seem like a small thing but if you think about what it means to have a speaking child who can use words to share an array of emotions… contrast that with a kid who is feeling all the things but lacks the ability to use spoken language. What joy that he can tell us exactly what he finds yummy- not just eating to eat, but letting us know he finds this croissant particularly yummy.
I’m not going to lie, when we were introduced to AAC devices we didn’t get it. Let me simplify this- it’s most often just an iPad with software on it. There are different apps- we’re currently using #Proloquo2Go The first few months were frustrating- how was this going to help us, why was it so complicated, wouldn’t this make him dependent and less prone to speaking??
But I’ll admit I was wrong. Little man navigates through this thing finding words I didn’t even know were on there. When we do songs, he’ll tap through as many of the words as he can match. Just cos he doesn’t speak, doesn’t mean he doesn’t understand.
Even better, he sometimes not only touches the word, he mouths along with it- effectively increasing moments when we actual hear him speak.
I still hope for a time when we don’t need this, but the alternative wasn’t good for him or us. All the Frustration as we tried to guess what he was trying to share. We try to never leave home without this and while we could load the software to other devices, we’ve been advised that it’s best to have just one dedicated device that only serves as his communication device as opposed to a tablet for watching cartoons/playing games. It may be an imperfect tool but it’s a very useful one.

AU➡️SHARE with another autism parent if you have been there.
I’ve seen this happen on too many occasions.
My sweet little girl walks up to some other kids and ask them to be her friend.
Every once in a while, the child or a group of kids will say sure and off they go, and that’s a happy day.
But more often than I like, I see a couple kids look at each other with a look that says we’re not interested or just say “no”.
And I know they don’t owe her anything but then she might try to insert herself in their play and she doesn’t understand what’s happening and it’s just so heartbreaking to watch.💔

The first time a medical professional told me parents of autistic children with high support needs have Post Traumatic Stress Disorder similar to combat veterans I thought she was nuts.

Autism was new for us and Michael Francis was still a toddler. Yeah, things were hard, but THAT hard?!?

JAJaiden dances in a lot of our videos and some people have asked why he seems to dance or move around so much. It’s definitely something he loves to do, but it also happens to be one of his stims.
When he was younger, some of his main stims were spinning around, hand flapping, and walking on his tiptoes. Now, it’s dancing.
I realized a lot of people don’t know what stimming is or why autistic children do it, so I asked Jaiden to explain it in his own words.
He said stimming is like breathing. It makes him happy and brings him comfort. It’s something that just happens, and sometimes he doesn’t even realize he’s doing it.
The world can feel overwhelming. And just like when people do yoga or art or anything that brings them calm, peace, and comfort, that’s what stimming does for him and so many other autistic children.
Like he said, “Even if it doesn’t look right to you, it’s right for me.” 😊
It’s not something they should have to hide. It’s them regulating, coping, and finding their peace. 💙 @jai_at_play

1. Don’t focus on when where and how focus on the solution
2. Enroll immediately for all resources because it’s time for all hands on deck. (The waiting lists are LONG)
3. Apply for a disability tax credit
4. Open RDSP + savings plan
5. Apply for funding for respite

JAA fellow Autism parent asked me to ask Jaiden, “When you couldn’t speak, did you understand people around you?” after sharing that her little one seems to understand but can’t always express themselves.
Jaiden shared that even when he couldn’t say anything back, he could still see and hear people around him. And even if he didn’t fully understand what was happening or what was being said at the time, he was still learning, and all of the efforts to connect with him mattered.
To the parents wondering if their child understands, please don’t give up. Being there matters, and words aren’t always needed to help someone feel loved, seen, and included. ❤️
