Small dishes of water allow young bird patients like this Red-bellied Woodpecker to practice drinking and bathing without risking drowning—yes, it can happen! It’s a joy to watch our bird patients discover how good a cold bath feels on a hot day, too. 🛁
Providing a bird bath can help our wild neighbors cool off, but it’s important to be responsible. Keep these tips in mind. ⬇️
🌳 Pick a shady spot for your bird bath to keep water temps cool and prevent algae growth.
🥵 Check your water every couple hours on hot days to make sure it’s not scalding! Better yet, opt for a bird bath with a bubbler to help refresh and cool it down.
💧 Ensure the bath is no deeper than 2 inches maximum, and it’s best if it is has gently sloping sides.
🪨 Add a clean rock or two to the bath to provide perching surfaces for the birds to safely stand on while drinking or bathing.
📏 Put the bath at least 10 feet away from any bird feeders or food sources to prevent droppings or seeds from contaminating the water.
🧽 Clean your bird bath 𝗮𝘁 𝙡𝙚𝙖𝙨𝙩 once per week with soap and water, followed by a 10% bleach solution that you let the bath soak in for 10 minutes before rinsing with water. 𝘐𝘧 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘤𝘢𝘯𝘯𝘰𝘵 𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘮𝘪𝘵 𝘵𝘰 𝘤𝘭𝘦𝘢𝘯𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘣𝘪𝘳𝘥 𝘣𝘢𝘵𝘩 𝙖𝙩 𝙡𝙚𝙖𝙨𝙩 𝘰𝘯𝘤𝘦 𝘱𝘦𝘳 𝘸𝘦𝘦𝘬, 𝘥𝘰 𝘯𝘰𝘵 𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘷𝘪𝘥𝘦 𝘢 𝘣𝘪𝘳𝘥 𝘣𝘢𝘵𝘩.

In my region I have Black Capped Chickadees
There songs are soft and short, and they sound like “Hey Sweetie”
There companion calls, like most song birds, are just little chips
And their alarm call is where they get their name from
Chick a dee dee
An interesting note about the chickadee alarm call is that the more dees at the end of the call the higher the perceived threat from the bird
So humans usually get less dees, like chick a dee dee
Whereas my cats usually get more dees, like chick a dee dee dee dee

Mourning Doves love eating off the ground. A great way you can attract them to your yard is by putting mixed birdseed on the ground.
Mourning Doves are identified by their overall brown appearance, long tail, black dots on their wings and blue eyeshadow!
When not paired up for nesting they travel in groups looking for seeds to eat off the ground. 🕊️
You can find them pretty much anywhere in North America. 👀

House Finches are sparrow sized birds with beautiful red coloration on the top halves of their bodies
Their alarm call, like many song birds, is a series of sharp chirps
I think you can really feel the energy and alarm in these calls
They also have this call that sounds like a squeak toy that I assume is their companion call but I’m not 100% sure
Companion calls are used to keep track of mates
And when it comes to their songs
Imagine a friend of yours who never stops talking
And that to me is what the house finch’s song sounds like
Seeds are a big part of a their diet, so they are commonly seen at the bird feeder
