#Repost @natindigtimes with @use.repost ・・・ Protesters gathered in Boorloo/Perth on Monday calling for the urgent closure of Unit 18, the high-security youth detention unit at Casuarina Prison that holds some of Western Australia’s most vulnerable Aboriginal children. The rally came after the coronial inquest into the death of Cleveland Dodd, the first young person in WA to die in youth detention, recommended shutting down the unit immediately. Cleveland, a 16-year-old Yamatji boy, spent much of his time in Unit 18 confined for nearly the entire day, with minimal access to programs or outdoor time, before taking his life in October 2023. Following the inquest, Cleveland’s mother, Nadene Dodd, met with Premier Roger Cook, who she says supports closing the unit but insists conditions must improve urgently until a safe alternative is available.

When I went to Monday’s Boorloo/Perth Invasion Day rally, I expected a peaceful day. A chance to come together, listen to First Nations voices, and be alongside each other calling for change. Instead, we were met with violence. What happened was terrifying. It’s still sitting with me, and I know I’m not alone in that. If you were there, please look after yourself and each other. There is no shame in needing support. I’ve reached out myself, and it’s helped. I am in solidarity with the calls for the man who threw a bomb into the crowd to face the most serious charges possible. This was an act meant to terrorise people who were peacefully gathering. The Greens in WA and nationally are amplifying the calls of First Nations elders, raising serious concerns with WA Police and the AFP, and pushing back on media coverage that hasn’t told the full truth. I’m grateful we’re safe. And I’m holding everyone who was there in my thoughts. Video description: Jordon speaks to camera while sitting at a white desk. This is a terrifying escalation of the hateful rhetoric the far-right has been pushing for far too long. We cannot let them divide us. We must act to address this extremism at its roots. My heart goes out to all those who experienced and were impacted by the attack, and my gratitude to the rally organisers who worked to keep those gathered safe.
