Selbst in der Whiskymeile auf Sylt trinkt in der Nacht, wo das Meer sie verschlingt, die Schickeria auf ewiges Wachstum. Hirten ohne Herden ersaufen im Mittelmeer aus Wanderlust. Milliarden Rinder verpesten die Atemluft.
Wer hat das Gelüst nach Fleisch zum Menschenrecht gemacht? Wie viel Tropenholz fällt die Gier nach Profit? Wie viel Leben fällt mit ihm in Vergessenheit? Die Sonne sinkt über der Savanne. Was versengten ihre Strahlen? Noch? Trifft es die Ärmsten der Armen? Warum hören wir sie nicht? Bald trifft es auch die Reichen. Wer soll uns dann hören? So viele Berichte. So viele Fragen.

CABertolt Brecht’s epic theatre was never about emotional submission. By exposing stage mechanics, interrupting narrative flow, and addressing the audience directly, Brecht dismantled theatrical illusion deliberately. His work resists passive spectatorship. Theatre becomes a political act that asks something of those watching it.
That logic finds its clearest musical expression in his collaboration with Kurt Weill. Together, they produced some of the sharpest theatre of the twentieth century, most notably “The Threepenny Opera”. Its influence wasn’t just restricted to the stage, but also bled into popular culture, (think “Mack the Knife”).
From that same work comes “Pirate Jenny”, a song inseparable from Lotte Lenya, Weill’s wife who performed it across Europe and the United States. Lenya’s Jenny isn’t sentimental. She’s controlled, deliberate, and dangerous. The rage is held back, not released, and that restraint is doing the work.
“Pirate Jenny” is built around reversal. It starts with erasure, a woman made invisible by labour and class. The ship on the horizon isn’t fantasy in any comforting sense. It’s consequence. Violence isn’t softened or made palatable . By the end, power has shifted completely, exposing how quickly authority reshapes moral certainty.
In Milva’s Italian interpretation, that structure tightens further. She doesn’t ask for empathy. She controls the distance in the room, moving between restraint and threat with precision. There’s no safe emotional landing. The performance demands attention rather than identification.
This is Milva at her most Brechtian. Not because she follows the form, but because she understands what it’s doing. “Pirate Jenny” stops being a character’s fantasy and turns outward, asking the audience to think about power, justice, and where they sit within it.
The song closes not with resolution, but with departure.

KASometimes you don’t want the audience to be swept away in the action or have a suspension of disbelief. Sometimes you want them to remember that this is not reality but theatre- a show put on for your amusement, with an actor, and artifice and cunning. Brecht called this the Alienation Effect- reminding the audience that you are performing for them, and this is not reality. Used carefully it can be quite powerful.
This excerpt from the work of Mürle does a great job of showing the Alienation Effect in action. He is constantly reminding us this is a puppet, this is a show, I am creating and reinventing the rules.
