UNAfter years of displacement, some Syrians are deciding to return home.
But returning is only the first step. Many homes, schools and services have been damaged or destroyed.
During his visit to Syria, UNHCR Global Goodwill Ambassador Theo James met families rebuilding their lives and communities.
With support from the European Union, UNHCR provides protection services at community centers, mental health and psychosocial support, legal aid and child protection, as well as cash assistance and shelter support.
Even as the situation remains fragile, continued humanitarian support and longer-term investment will be essential to help communities rebuild.

This might be one of the most eye-opening AI and data-awareness videos yet. The Pause Before You Post campaign by DPCR Ireland shows how fast tech is racing ahead of child protection. Parents share 63 photos a month, often without realizing how far those images can spread.
With just 20 photos, AI can create a convincing deepfake. Even worse, half of the child photos on criminal forums come from public posts by parents.
Small details—like a child’s name, uniform, routine, or friends—quickly turn into data points. Piece by piece, strangers can rebuild a child’s world from photos meant to be harmless.
In a world where faces and locations are tracked in seconds, every upload becomes permanent data that can be copied or misused.

REAs Ramadan begins, families in Gaza are still struggling to meet their basic needs.
Over the winter, heavy rains and strong winds have destroyed and damaged tents, while materials for rebuilding shelters remain limited.
Standing water and cold temperatures are increasing the risk of disease and hypothermia, with reduced access to clean water, warm clothing and medical supplies increasing the danger. According to UNICEF, 11 children in Gaza have have already frozen to death this winter.

“No one’s going to feed me.”
These were Arthur Labinjo-Hughes’ final cries - recorded while adults were nearby. Adults who could hear him. Adults who could have helped.
They didn’t.
Instead, they hurt him more.
Before everything changed, Arthur had lived with his mother. In 2019, she was convicted of manslaughter after fatally stabbing her partner & was sent to prison. Following her imprisonment, Arthur went to live with his ‘father’ - a move that would ultimately place him in grave danger.
Arthur was six years old.
By the time he died, he had more than 130 bruises.
He had been force-fed salt, starved, isolated, humiliated & made to sleep on the floor.
He suffered during COVID lockdowns - when vulnerable children like Arthur were cut off from teachers, extended family & anyone who might have noticed something was wrong.
Lockdowns did not create abuse.
But they magnified it.
They hid it.
Even during lockdown, child protection services visited Arthur’s home just weeks before he died.
Bruises were visible.
Concerns had been raised.
The abuse was dismissed - & Arthur was left with the very people hurting him.
A system failed.
& a child paid a horrific price.
In December 2021, Emma Tustin was convicted of Arthur’s murder.
Thomas Hughes was convicted of manslaughter.
Arthur should be here.
He should be growing up.
He should be safe.
Justice for Arthur means remembering him -
& demanding better before another child’s cries go unheard.
