UN🇳🇴🔦 Community Spotlight 1: This is Mimi, who moved to Norway from Indonesia 1.5 years ago.
She experienced a big shock when she first arrived: coming from the fourth most crowded country in the world to a country with just around 5 million people!

Lee’s Sandwiches is the product of the merging of ideas and family support. Chieu Le, the founder, came to America and settled in San Jose, CA in 1980. He began taking adult education classes to study English and frequently bought food from a catering truck before and after class. Seeing the potential of a portable food service vehicle, Chieu Le worked on a catering truck to better understand the business. By 1981, he bought his first catering truck and started his route around San Jose.

DEThrough this Sunday, October 8, we invite you to visit the Community Spotlight exhibition “Škáta: The Art of Skateboarding,” located in the Creative Hub inside the Martin Building. 🛹🪶
On September 17, we celebrated the exhibition with an afternoon of Škáta (which means to play, in Lakota). We got our groove on as Indigenous skaters rolled in from Creative Hub, decked out in their regalia, bringing a traditional dance performance to the Kemper Courtyard for a one-time-only event.
Visitors were able to watch and engage with artists painting live on skate decks donated by Boardpusher (@boardpusher), participate in artmaking activities, and explore the Community Spotlight featuring skatedecks from Strongholds Society’s collection.
The Stronghold Society (@strongholdsociety), founded by artist Walt Pourier (whose voice you hear in this video) in 2011, is a nonprofit dedicated to inspiring confidence, creativity, hope, and ambition in our youth. Bridging Native and non-Native communities through skating and art, programs support the youth movement through Live Life Call to Action campaigns that foster empowerment, resilience, and well-being.
❗ Please note: this was a special museum performance in connection with both the “Škáta: The Art of Skateboarding” Community Spotlight and the “Desert Rider: Dreaming in Motion” exhibition, which closed on September 24. Skateboarding is not permitted otherwise on the museum campus.
