Lizards are not commonly found in amber, as they are larger and less likely to get trapped compared to insects. However, Burmese amber has yielded several well-preserved lizard fossils, some of which are quite remarkable. Many of the lizards preserved in amber show primitive features compared to modern species. They might belong to groups like the geckos or skinks, offering evidence of the early evolution of modern lizard lineages. . . . #amber #trilobite #scorpion #ancestor #cambrian #paleontology #jurassicworldrebirth #jurassicworld #insect #jurassicpark #jurassiccoast #jurassicworlddominion #jurassicworldfallenkingdom #jurassicworldevolution #archaeology #naturalhistorymuseum #dinosaur #fossilhunter #fossil #deeptime #life #evolution #cretaceous #biology #nature #history #earth #scorpion #taxidermy

Our #Inktober offering is courtesy of our FossilLab, a popular attraction in our #DeepTime exhibition. Here’s Myria Perez illustrating the tooth of a shark that swam ~23 million years ago in what is now known as North Carolina. To make scientific illustrations the FossilLab team uses a microscope with a camera lucida attachment, which allows the artist to see both the magnified specimen and the drawing surface at the same time. Scientific illustrations accurately capture important details of the specimen that may be hard to see in photos. Paleontologists often pair the drawings with photos when they present their research. #FossilFriday #Sharks

What might Earth look like 250 million years from now? 🌍 “While there is no certainty about the future geometry of the Earth, educated guesses can be made about future plate configurations by using current plate motions and tectonic principles [shown in this speculative animation]. The northward trajectory of Africa suggests that it will collide with Europe and Arabia closing the Mediterranean and Red Seas about 75 million years from now. A Himalayan-scale mountain range will extend from Spain, across Southern Europe and into the Middle East and Asia. Similarly, Australia will collide with Southeast Asia and a new subduction zone extends westward across the Central Indian Ocean. One of the key events in this future geography is the beginning of subduction along the eastern coasts of North America and South America. In time, this new westward dipping will consume the Atlantic Ocean. The Atlantic Ocean, 100 million years in the future, will begin to narrow beneath the Americas. The Indian Ocean will also contract due to northward subduction into the Central Indian trench. Antarctica will collide along southern Australia, and the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, the last vestige of seafloor, will be subducted beneath eastern North America. Once that happens, the Atlantic Ocean will rapidly close and a new supercontinent will begin to form. The rocks that contain the remains of ancient New York, Boston and DC will be sitting atop high mountain ranges. About 250 million years in the future, the Atlantic and Indian oceans will have closed. North America will have collided with Africa and the Pacific will have grown much wider, encircling more than half the Earth. This future supercontinent would be called "Pangea Proxima", because it would be the next Pangea, but not necessarily the last!" Did you know Earth has already experienced five mass extinctions? 1. Ordovician-Silurian – 443 million years ago 2. Late Devonian – 372 million years ago 3. Permian-Triassic – 252 million years ago (a.k.a. The Great Dying) 4. Triassic-Jurassic – 201 million years ago 5. Cretaceous-Paleogene – 66 million years ago (goodbye, dinosaurs) Each one reshaped life on Earth… Each one wiped out the dominant species of its time. Now we have us. Advanced, intelligent—and consuming the planet at record speed. So, here’s the real question: Are we heading toward the sixth mass extinction? Or worse… are we causing it? After years and years of waiting… I finally got to see the Nation’s T. rex in person and I am SO STOKED! This beautiful dinosaur was discovered in Montana by rock hound Kathy Wankel back in 1988. It was known as the Wankel Rex for decades. When I worked in Montana I saw replicas of this skeleton everywhere, but the actual fossil had already been transported to DC. Now the Wankel Rex has a new name and a new location: the Nation’s T. rex on display in the #Deeptime exhibit @smithsoniannmnh. And yesterday my dreams came true and I saw this T. rex face to face and I swooned so hard for this incredible specimen. I also love that it’s ripping the head off one of my least favorite dinosaurs, a Triceratops. Vengeance is sweet my friends. 🏛: @smithsoniannmnh #nationstrex#smithsonian#naturalhistorymuseum#tyrannosaurusrex#museumexhibition#trex#smithsoniannmnh#womeninSTEM#paleontology#paleontologisthowdoyoumuseum#dinosaursofinstagram#dinosaurios#ilovescience

A Prehistoric Body Theater Film “Ghosts of Hell Creek: primitive streak” 🎬 CLIP - ACT 2 AMNIOTA ACT 2 takes place in the vast swamps of the super-continent Pangaea during the Carboniferous Period, in a world ruled by giant insects. Meet Protoclepsydrops, the first of the amniota - four-limbed animals recently evolved from amphibians who can lay the first hard-shelled eggs. Protoclepsydrops is the original pioneer in the movement to dry land, and is the great-great-grandfather of two historic lineages - the reptiles and the mammals. Ghosts of Hell Creek is our flagship project, an epic dance-theater piece telling a 500-million-year-long story of our evolutionary origins. Each act features a unique prehistoric animal and moment in Earth’s history, choreographed with a blend of wild organic realism and elegant Indonesian dance stylization. The stage is set like a mesmerizing diorama with immersive clay-textured sets, full-body clay makeup, iconic prosthetics, atmospheric lighting, and a bassy soundtrack filled with primeval soundscapes and experimental gamelan percussion. 🎥 Our film, a 30-minute cinematic adaptation, brings you closer to this prehistoric world. 2.023 billion years ago something monstrous struck Earth. A rock the size of Mount Everest, traveling at 20 km/s, slammed into our planet. The explosion released energy a billion times stronger than the Hiroshima bomb. It dug a hole 70 km deep, vaporized continents, and reshaped Earth’s crust. Today, all that’s left is a scar so big, it can be seen from space: the Vredefort Dome, 300 km wide. The impact uplifted ancient rocks from deep inside Earth’s core, still visible today. Scientists found shatter cones, molten glass, and rocks torn by forces beyond comprehension. Some believe it changed the climate, possibly altering the path of life itself. Now imagine something like that happening again. Not in the past. But tomorrow. We aren’t safe. We’re just lucky. Because the cosmos, doesn’t care who’s next. #VredefortCrater #Astrophile #ImpactCrater #MassExtinction #EarthHistory #DeepTime #CosmicHorror #AsteroidImpact #UNESCOsite #ScientificWonder #SpaceScar #InterstellarImpact #OscarAstrophile #DoomFromTheSky #PlanetaryHistory #ApocalypticTruth #Astrogeology #ScienceAndChills #SpaceMystery #BillionsOfYearsAgo
