Repost from @sahilbloom • The best parenting advice: Make a list of all of the principles and values that you want your child to live by, then go out and actually embody them yourself. If you want your child to treat your wife like a queen, you’d better treat your wife like a queen. If you want your child to embrace delayed gratification, you’d better embrace delayed gratification. If you want your child to do hard things, you’d better do hard things. Children learn by absorbing. You do not teach a child something by telling them how to do it—you teach them through showing them how it’s done. Rule: Live the truth you want your child to embrace. #parentingadvice #parentingtips #leadbyexample #childrenlearnbywhatyoudonotwhatyousay

While well intentioned, doing too much for our children robs them of the opportunity to develop critical life skills. Remember, confidence is built through competence. Children need the space to work at hard things to learn how to do hard things, showing them they're capable. Before rushing in to solve a problem for them, give them the space to work at things first. This builds frustration tolerance, persistence, patience, problem solving, and delayed gratification. Before handing them a device to entertain them, let your child embrace boredom. This is the breeding ground for even more problem-solving, creative thinking, innovation, focus, attention, and decision-making skills to flourish!

Today someone told me the thing holding them back in their running or starting their fitness is that running is hard. And I want to let you all in on a secret from someone training for ultramarathons, and has been running for her entire teen and adult life. Running is supposed to be hard. That isn’t a personal flaw. But it does get easier as you gain fitness. We do hard things and they make us better. Magical runs WILL come. And you can do hard things. Keep going 🤍🤘🏻

🛹Children can do hard things🛹 ⭐️I came across this video by @chasing.sage by chance earlier this week and fell in love with the relationship between this little girl and her father. It’s a gorgeous example of an adult acting as a secure base, leaning into a child’s readiness to do something that feels scary. ✨I was given permission to share it alongside my commentary ♥️Children don’t need to be pushed. They need you to trust that they can in their own time, and with your support along the way. When you become a child’s secure base they find their own power, and they revel in it because it is all theirs! ♥️Children often show feelings of ambivalence. They want to do something and they pull away. ♥️This is healthy and part of the dance of growing independence alongside brain development. ♥️As adults we don’t need to push. We need to roll with resistance, offer them our safe presence, and give them permission to go when ready. We can (as illustrated beautifully here) let our child lead the dance: ⭐️“How will I know if you need me?” ⭐️“How will you tell me if you want to stop/want to leave/don’t like this anymore?” Remaining mindful that praise can have unintended consequences, when our child starts to do something they have been previously scared of, we can learn to pause and hold back. If we cheer or celebrate their achievement too soon we run the risk of stealing it from them, making it ‘our triumph’ over theirs. Again, this video illustrates this so beautifully when the little girl celebrates herself AND tells her father how she wants to be celebrated next time. ♥️Resilience isn’t about “bouncing back”, it is about “bouncing forward”, learning from challenges to grow and learn. And learning never comes from a place of fear, threat, or heightened anxiety. It comes from a place of safety, where children can try to do hard things and know you will be there to catch them if they fall. That’s how internal safety and trust in ourselves grows.

Being an adult is doing things you don’t want to do everyday, stop expecting to find everything easy Stop expecting to feel excited + motivated every day Consistency comes from doing the things you need to do, regardless of the mood you’re in You CAN do hard things, you have plenty of evidence for yourself that you can Do do the workout, make the meal, get out for a walk - it doesn’t matter if you can’t be bothered. Do it anyway.

Don’t believe the parent guilt—children need to SEE you do hard things, too. Children need to know that their mom and dad not only say it, but live by it themselves. YOU be their strongest example. YOU show them how. YOU give them something wholesome to replicate. Whether that’s showing them emotions are okay, they’re allowed to have setbacks and shortcomings, or getting out that door to do the uncomfortable to grow yourself. Pretty soon you’ll see they’ll begin to replicate your actions. So give them some good actions to mirror 💪🏼🙌🏼👏🏼 #motherrunner #womenrunning #runningmotivation #momrunner #runningcommunity #runnergirl #momlife #trackworkout #familylife #runnersworld #runnersofinstagram #runningreels #motherhood #raisingkids #marathontraining #largefamilylife

Are we accidentally weakening the very thing our grown kids need most? Many of us were raised to believe a good mom fixes the problem. We were the helicopter generation: hovering, rescuing, smoothing the road, because we hated seeing our kids hurt. But in doing so, we often robbed them of something sacred: resilience. When every hardship is removed, strength has no place to grow. Here’s the shift, Momma: now that our kids are grown, we don’t rush in to fix. We lean in with empathy. We listen without correcting. We resist the urge to rescue. And then, we remind them of the truth: You can do hard things. When they face the challenge and rise? Your heart swells, not because you saved them, but because they’re learning they don’t need saving. That’s resilience. And it’s one of the greatest gifts we can give our adult children. 👉Save this for a reminder that you don’t have to fix anything for your grown kids.
