Despite how aggressive it sounds, the song was never meant to glorify violence. According to late vocalist Dave Williams, the lyrics were actually inspired by the unity and chaos of the mosh pit. He described it as a kind of unspoken code among fans: if someone falls, you pick them back up. The track was built around a heavy guitar riff by C.J. Pierce, with Williams delivering the unforgettable hook, “Let the bodies hit the floor.” The song quickly became a defining track of the early-2000s nu-metal era. It reached #6 on the Mainstream Rock chart and #12 on Alternative Airplay, while the album Sinner went platinum just six weeks after release. Today, the track has racked up hundreds of millions of streams and remains one of the band’s most recognizable songs. After the September 11 attacks, many radio stations temporarily removed the song from their playlists because the chorus was considered too sensitive for the moment. “Bodies” was also used as the official theme for SummerSlam 2001 and later for the ECW brand from 2006 to 2007.
