People have this misconception of the ecollar being a tool that owners just slap on their dog’s necks, dial it all the way up and start electrocuting and torturing our pets for fun. 🤷🏻♀️
The reality is good ecollar training requires time and proper conditioning. Before even using the ecollar, you must teach your dog the meaning of pressure and how to turn it off.
Then once your dog is actually ready to use the ecollar, you find the appropriate working level for your dog. This will vary depending on the dog, level of distraction and arousal. No dog is the same. That’s why having a high quality ecollar allows you do make micro adjustments to the level of stimulation needed.
Also the ecollar is not always used as a correction tool to suppress behaviours, you can also use it to increase your dog’s activity level and encourage wanted behaviours as well. The ecollar is simply a communication tool so you choose what you tell your dog 🙌
Here I am testing the ecollar on myself at Niffler’s working level for distractions… I can’t even feel it 🤷🏻♀️

THThere are some situations where an e collar MAY increase the well-being of an animal; however, this decision needs to be made on the basis of fact, not dogma.
When working with Ilia, a key part of our conversations around e collars involved exploration of past, current and planned future use. We worked on adjusting his use towards LIMA principles by prioritising an emergency recall and low level e collar conditioning games as seen in this video.
We minimised his need for e collar use while keeping a potentially life saving last resort emergency to maximise the well-being of his dog. While e-collars aren’t something we teach at Thinking Canine, we do believe in objectively analyzing each dog/human dynamic and that includes training tool usage.

HOVibrate collars... most people will tell you they can’t be as effective as an ecollar, but that comes from not understanding how you can condition them.
When you move beyond using it to correct a behaviour, you can start to build a response that is grounded in optimism and partnership.
I now have both of my dogs fully conditioned to the vibration collar, and the proof is in the dog in front of me.

TALet me answer some of my most common e-collar questions:
1. Why is Wafer on a double box?
Wafer is a very intense dog, even at 8 months he was maxing out one box and still refusing to out so he got upgraded to two boxes. We don’t get to choose what is aversive for our dogs, Wafer has a very pain tolerance and needs that second box for accountability especially when in drive.
2. Why do you position the boxes this way?
Wafer is a small dog so his neck isn’t very big, this is the only way the boxes fit on the collar. If I had a choice I’d distribute the boxes more. And where the collar sits just depends on what I’m doing. I don’t like the boxes bumping up on my leg so I generally place the boxes wherever it is not bumping up next to me. When we do fronts the boxes are centered right between his ears.
3. Are there other benefits to using a double box and other technical questions?
The additional benefit is having the stim more distributed so you can go at a lower level with more contact points. Both boxes are paired to the same button so it’s no different than using a single box!
No matter the dog, e-collar training is highly beneficial, it’s not just for high drive working dogs. Gracie, my sensitive, low drive GSD also uses an e-collar. It’s the only way to reliably communicate with your dog off leash. If used properly this clarity helps boost their confidence. Of course the amount of stim you use will always depend on the dog, but as long as it is used properly, there’s no better tool!

Common misunderstanding of balanced trainers is that they will slap an e collar on every dog and call it a day. Now SOME (bad) trainers do this. Not all! Just like force free training itself is not BAD, there’s a ton of BAD force free trainers (they are usually the LOUDEST too).
An e collar can be used as safety backup like a seatbelt. Your dog has 99% recall we like to have it for that extra safety JUST in case.
Does the dog look happy? Yes. In fact the ones on the E collars being shared, look even HAPPIER than OP in their fenced in yard. (Our dog is NOT happier looking BECAUSE of the collar but the relationship with the human).
You’re also not supposed to use an e collar to recall your dog ✨every time✨. If that is happening you need to go back to the basics and proof that recall more. It’s meant to be back up. Not something you rely on every time.
