Identifying an Original Eames Lounge Chair (Pt. 1) In addition to an overall correct shape and form, a handful of key details can indicate whether an Eames Lounge Chair is authentic or not, and help to identify during which era a chair was produced. Here are three important ones: 1. Cushion clips: Original examples from the 1970s onward will have clips that allow the seat back cushions to be removed by pulling upward. 2. Veneer wood species: From 1956 to 1990, Eames Lounge Chairs were typically made using Brazilian Rosewood veneer. Brazilian Rosewood has been prized for its recognizable and high-contrast wood grain, with dramatic streaks of dark brown or black. Because it was so widely used in the 20th century, it was declared an endangered species in 1990, and is now a key indicator of production era on Eames Lounge Chairs. 3. Labels: Throughout the history of Eames Lounge Chair production, various labels were applied, with label style changing frequently. From roughly 1971 into the 1990s, a black, rectangular “Herman Miller” label was used. While labels can be a great indicator of production era, they can easily fall off or be removed. “Identifying an Original” is a collaboration between @beoriginalamericas and @rarify. Jeremy and David from Rarify and Ben from Be Original Americas show how to authenticate and identify originality in collectible furniture, and explaining the incredible value that authentic design can have.
