INTirunellai Narayana Iyer Seshan (1932–2019), widely known as T. N. Seshan, was the 10th Chief Election Commissioner of India who transformed the way elections were conducted in the country. Serving from 1990 to 1996, he enforced the Model Code of Conduct with unprecedented strictness and restored public confidence in the electoral system. Before his tenure, violations like booth capturing, misuse of money and muscle power, and election malpractices were often ignored. Seshan took firm action against such practices and made political parties accountable to election rules.
He was a 1955 batch IAS officer of the Tamil Nadu cadre and also served as Cabinet Secretary of India in 1989 before becoming Chief Election Commissioner. His fearless administration and commitment to fair elections earned him national respect. In recognition of his contributions to public service, he was awarded the Ramon Magsaysay Award for Government Service in 1996.
T. N. Seshan remains remembered as the man who gave the Election Commission its true authority.
