BIToday marks the end of Amniotic Fluid Embolism (AFE) Awareness Month.
AFE occurs in approximately 1 in 40,000 deliveries—impacting around 100 women each year. Up to 60% of those mothers will not make it home. Up to 20% of those babies won’t either.
But statistics don’t matter when it’s your wife… your daughter… your sister… your niece… your friend—lying in a hospital bed, fighting for her life.
This is why awareness matters.
Families are leaving hospitals forever changed. Some are going home without the ones they love. Others are carrying both grief and gratitude, learning to trust God in the middle of unimaginable pain.
Even in the darkest moments, we hold onto the truth that God is near to the brokenhearted and walks with us through every valley.

It’s rare, until it’s you.
This week is Amniotic Fluid Embolism Awareness Day.
We are the luckiest of the unlucky.
“I’ll take those odds any day. Crazy things like that only happen to other people. I’m just going to have a baby.”
This is what I would have said had I known Amniotic Fluid Embolism existed before I gave birth. The odds were in my favor. This never should have happened to me, and yet it did.
When you experience a rare complication, every single time someone quotes a rare statistic to you, it feels like a gut punch. We immediately remember when statistics used to comfort us. But, now we are that rare statistic. It did happen to us. We can no longer take solace in the probability. We can no longer feel peace knowing something is unlikely to happen to us. We miss being able to mitigate our fears and anxieties with statistics. Instead, we’ve become the statistic, the anomaly.
When the “rare thing” happens to you or someone you know, its rarity loses all significance. Your peace of mind is forever altered.

In honor of AFE Awareness Day, I’m sharing my “never” experience with AFE, and how that moment has forever shaped me as a nurse.
AFE can make us feel so powerless, but there are things that we can do to ensure that we are prepared if and when we fall on the side of experiencing that “never” event.
One of the many incredible things that the AFE foundation provides is FREE education to healthcare providers to ensure that we have the skills and tools to be able to know and recognize the signs early so that we can act with intention.
They also have simulation tool kits, so please, check them out (afesupport.org), add their crisis number to your phone, so you have it if you need it 🩵

Amniotic Fluid Embolism is one of the most fatal birth complications in the world.
Published rates of survivability range from 20-60%.
1 in 40,000 families will experience this catastrophic complication in the U.S.
That’s approximately 100 families per year.
Amniotic fluid embolism (AFE) is a sudden and unexpected life-threatening birth complication that can affect both mother and baby. Although poorly understood,It is believed to occur when a mother suffers an allergic-like (immune) response to amniotic fluid and fetal material that enters her bloodstream during labor or shortly after delivery. It is important to note that the entrance of amniotic fluid and fetal material into the bloodstream is a normal part of the birth process and in most women, it does not cause this serious reaction.
Most often an AFE involves two very serious and life-threatening complications; heart and lung failure (cardiorespiratory collapse) and severe bleeding (disseminated intravascular coagulopathy or DIC). Independently, each of these complications is extremely serious and life-threatening. Together, they are exceptionally challenging to treat and require immediate and aggressive medical care.
We know so much more than we did 15 years ago.
But, we still don’t know why this happens. We still don’t know who it will happen to.
We still have so much more work to do.
