When you’re constantly repeating yourself and thinking, “Why aren’t they listening?”… It usually sounds like: “Sit down.” “Stop.” “Hands to yourself.” “Focus.” …and somehow the behavior keeps happening. Here’s the shift: reminders only work if students already know what to do. If students don’t have a clear, practiced alternative, your words just become background noise. Instead of repeating rules, teach what to DO: •What does calm look like? •How do we move safely around the classroom? •What does teamwork actually sound like? Start with manipulatives that can be physically bundled together, like cubes, mini erasers and cups, and straws. By using these manipulatives before base 10 blocks, students are able to see that the 10 ones get grouped together and turned into a 10 rather than just traded for a 10!
