MAOn Monday, Year 11 business and food tech students from Palmerston North Girls’ High School came to our Manawatū campus for a Food Innovation Day.
They learnt about consumer choice, food innovation, and tried a range of sensory science activities to see how consumer perception and input feeds into product development.
If you know a Year 12 or 13 student who is interested in the magic of food tech and wants to experience university life, we’re hosting a brand new three day two night extravaganza! The Massey University Food Innovation Youth Summit will be held in January, with support from our friends at Food HQ and CEDA. Students will get to experience university life, create food in Food Pilot, test their senses at @feastmassey and get creating with all things food innovation. Applications close 31 October!

SUYou’ve probably heard the promise by now about lab-grown meat, cultivated meat, 3D-printed steak. No slaughter. No factory farms. No blood on the plate. The future of protein.
But even technology this fascinating deserves a closer look, especially when ethics are involved.
Lab-grown meat, also known as cultured or cell-based meat, begins with a small sample of cells taken from a living animal. These cells are then placed in a nutrient-rich growth medium and grown inside large bioreactors, where they multiply and develop into muscle tissue sometimes alongside fat and connective tissue.
Around the world, startups like @upsidefoods and @goodmeatinc are racing to commercialise beef, pork, seafood and even pet food made this way. Costs have dropped dramatically since the first lab-grown burger in 2013, pushing cultivated meat from experimental labs toward the global food system.
The science is advancing. But the questions remain about ethics, sustainability, and what “progress” really means.
