Here are my top tips for Foundation Paper Piecing(FPP): ✂️🔖📍🖨️ 📏 But first, make sure to save this post for later or even better share it with a friend. 😉 1. Print out Patterns at 100% - double check your printer settings. And actually check by measuring the 1in test square against your tape measure. (Don’t assume it is 1in just because it says so - actually measure it) 🖨️ 📏 2. Take your stitch length down to 1.8 (or 1.5) as this perforates more holes in your paper, making it easier to tear away. 🧵 3. Use on Open Toe Foot on your machine so you can easily see where you are stitching. 🪡 4. Have a second Rotary Cutter only for Paper and Craft. Mine is marked with a red ribbon and each time I replace my “Fabric” rotary cutter I then in turn replace my “Paper” cutting blade. ✂️🔖 Do you have a FPP tip you would like to share below - I’d love to hear it or did you find the tips above helpful? FPP made magical! 🌟 Foundation Paper Piecing gives you that crisp, precise piecing we love. It might look tricky but with these tips & the Starling collection by @maureencracknell, creating bold, dreamy blocks has never been easier! 🌙⁠ ⁠ Here’s The Secret: Sew. Press. Flip. Trim. ⁠ 1️⃣ Grab your Starling fabrics + FPP template (we used a New York Beauty variation). Crease all the lines between the numbers. Place the template right side down.⁠ 2️⃣ Dab a dot of glue behind #1 and place fabric on top, right side up.⁠ Flip over to the right side of the template and fold the paper only on the crease between #1 & 2⁠ 3️⃣Trim a ¼” away from the paper’s edge. ⁠ 4️⃣With the next fabric right side up, place the unit on top aligning edges (fabrics will be right sides touching).⁠ 5️⃣ Flip over paper only, sew on the line (stitch length 1.3).⁠ 6️⃣ Open fabrics, press, flip over & repeat for the next section.⁠ ⁠ 💡 Tips: Use a Water Pen to make tearing away the paper easier, we used the FPP Water Pen from @craftmoore!⁠ ⁠ Tell us in the comments if this hack made FPP feel less scary! 🌟 Stay tuned, the Starling Lookbook is coming SOON! ⁠ ⁠ #ArtGalleryFabrics #AGFStarling #MaureenCracknell #SewingProjects #ModernQuilting #QuiltingCommunity #FoundationPaperPiecing #FPP #FPPQuilting #SewingTutorial #QuiltTutorial #SewingCommunity #ScrapBuster⁠

This leaf block is one that I designed years ago and it continues to be a favorite of mine. 🍂🍁 If you'd like to try FPP, I have some video tutorials saved on my highlights (the circles under my profile info), plus I have a few free FPP quilt block patterns on my blog! Just search "FPP free" in the search bar of my blog and they'll pop up. 🥰 You can find this leaf block, called Geometric Leaf, in my shop. I’ve enjoyed making this Deco Diamonds so much, from sewing the strips to trimming the templates - it’s all so satisfying 🥰 If you’re newer to FPP, you can still do this! I have step-by-step instructions in the pattern that guide you through. This is also larger and straight forward FPP, which makes this a really good “put some music on and turn your brain off” activity. Want to make your own Deco Diamonds quilt? Have you ever done something like this and if so how did you accomplish it? Also I didn’t mention it in this video but I really love using this mat for so many things. First because it is tempered glass, I can iron on it while it is on top of my lightboard! Perfect for Foundation Paper Piecing!! Inspired by Art Deco architecture, metallic detailing, and the symbolism of the moon, this design blends bold geometry with flowing curves in a way that feels both timeless and luxuriously modern. And yes — those curves are totally doable. Foundation paper piecing + reverse appliqué make it achievable (intermediate quilters, you’ve got this 💪). I also designed heavy-duty freezer paper templates specifically for this pattern to make those smooth curves even easier — because having the right tool makes all the difference.
