Ground anchors in geotechnical engineering are structural elements installed in soil or rock to provide stability and resist forces such as uplift, lateral loads, or overturning. They are commonly used to support retaining walls, slopes, deep excavations and foundations where additional resistance is required beyond the natural capacity of the ground. Anchors work by transferring load from the structure into a competent soil or rock layer through bonded sections, typically using grouted steel tendons or bars. There are different types of ground anchors, such as driven, drilled and grouted, tensioned (active) or untensioned (passive), and the selection of a suitable system depends on geotechnical considerations including ground conditions, load requirements, groundwater levels and the nature of the supported structure. Typically, Dr. Andrus teaches courses like CE 3210, which is all about Geotechnical Engineering, CE 4910/6910 on Ground Improvement Engineering, and CE 8210, which covers Advanced Soil Mechanics. These are just a few of the classes that he teaches, some of his other interests include Geotechnical Site Characterization, Earthquake Engineering, Non-Destructive Testing, and more! From soil samples to seismic data, Dr. Andrus brings expert insight into how the earth affects the built environment. He’s passionate about mentoring students and guiding them into exciting careers in geotechnical engineering, and he also has a strong appreciation for the Spanish language. Dr. Andrus brings energy, curiosity, and a love for discovery into his classrooms and we are proud to have Dr. Andrus on our team at Clemson University’s Glenn Department of Civil Engineering.
