BEEveryone’s been saying a recession is coming for almost two years now.
And honestly, the data did support it:
• Inflation had spiked to 9%
• The Fed raised interest rates at the fastest pace since the 1980s
• The yield curve stayed inverted for 14+ months (which usually signals recession)
Normally, that combination breaks an economy.
But here’s what makes this moment different:-
Jerome Powell is basically trying to slow the economy down just enough to cool inflation…
without causing companies to fire people and unemployment to spike.
That’s the hardest job in macroeconomics, because:
• If he keeps rates too high for too long → recession
• If he cuts rates too early → inflation comes back
• If he moves too fast in either direction → markets panic
But right now?
1. Inflation went down from ~9% to ~3%
2. Unemployment went up only slightly from ~3.4% to ~4.3%
And the economy is still running.
This is what economists call a soft landing.
It almost never happens.
But here’s the twist:
The real challenge is timing the rate cuts.
Cut too early → inflation comes back.
Cut too late → recession hits anyway.
He hasn’t avoided the recession.
He’s just delaying it and trying to make the landing as smooth as possible.
This next 12 months decides everything.
