My son had an aortic valve replacement last March. Even though he’s young, it’s been a long road getting back to doing everything he once loved. We were talking this weekend, and he told me he had changed his vision on working out. He said that previously, he was setting such high standards and expectations for himself that he was getting discouraged and having a hard time getting motivated to exercise at all. As a result, he was getting in one really intense workout a week, but finding it hard to find the time and enthusiasm to do it more often than that. So recently, he just started going to the gym and allowing himself to do whatever felt right that day without pressure on himself to always push harder or do more. The outcome has been that he actually IS doing more, and also more often, because he’s not dreading it or disappointing himself. Now, I’ll be the first one to say we need to push ourselves to be better, but sometimes cutting ourselves a little slack can be the most motivating thing we can do. We simply need to keep moving, no matter what that looks like!
