Scrat, the little saber-toothed squirrel who’s always chasing his acorn, was never part of the original script! He was added later for comic relief, but he became so popular that he ended up being one of the most iconic characters in the entire franchise. 🐿️🌰

Ice Age is a 2002 animated adventure comedy movie made by Blue Sky Studios and distributed by 20th Century Fox. It’s set during the prehistoric ice age and follows a group of mismatched animals who team up on a journey to return a lost human baby to its tribe.
The main characters are Manny, a woolly mammoth; Sid, a talkative sloth; and Diego, a saber-toothed tiger. Along the way, they face freezing weather, dangerous predators, and each other’s personalities. There’s also Scrat, a squirrel obsessed with his acorn, whose small side adventures became one of the movie’s most famous running gags.

Fact: Ice Age: Continental Drift (2012)
This film was the first in the franchise to use advanced computer-generated (CG) water and cloud effects on a massive scale. Unlike previous installments where water was simpler, the turbulent ocean sequences, storms, and waves seen when the continents drift apart required the animation team to combine proprietary software with off-the-shelf programs like Houdini and RealFlow. This was done to achieve a level of realism and complexity for the massive ocean and storm simulations, making the continental break-up feel truly catastrophic.

Fun fact: Ice Age: Continental Drift (2012): This was the first film in the Ice Age series to be released in stereoscopic 3D, which meant the animators had to completely rework their approach to depth and scale so Scrat’s acorn-chasing antics and the massive iceberg set pieces would pop out convincingly on the big screen.
