And that’s exactly the point. There’s no reaching, no excess tension, no muscling the ball to home plate. What stands out is how well he preserves the integrity of the sequence. The throw organizes around the center of mass as the driver—setting up the drop, the block, and rotation to occur as byproducts, allowing the arm to serve as the final link in transferring energy rather than trying to create it. Initial Move → Drop → Pelvic Rotation → Trunk Rotation → Unwind Nothing is rushed. Nothing is inserted early. This is what 100 mph looks like when it’s organized, not forced. #Develop

Watching this video of Tatsuya Imai basically play catch with his delivery makes me realize a couple things about the delivery overall on why he is able to have this simple delivery that would be normally deemed as “noy correct” but throw at Hugh velocities along with having one of the best sliders in the NPB. The conclusion is that he was able to find his optimal mechanics through trial and error. I am sure he didn’t throw like this his whole career but he was able to find what works best for him based on his anatomy, strengths, and deficiencies. I could talk all day about what Imai does well but one thing that is unique is him slightly lifting and stomping his heel in the ground. Years ago there was a crazy over the Kikuchi drill where you’d rise onto your toes, this is something similar that is probably more comfortable for you to try out. Being tall and having good posture with your body weight not sinking down into the ground too soon is a good way to actually put more force into the ground later and stay relaxed longer. A lot of people are just in a hurry to “drop” or “mirror the slope” that they forget that balance and posture must be prioritized early in the throw.
